Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- It may not have been a must-win situation for the Portland Trail Blazers, but it was pretty close. Zach Randolph scored 11 of his 23 points in the first quarter, when the Trail Blazers bolted to a quick lead en route to a 91-70 rout of the Utah Jazz. Losers of four straight and in danger of falling out of the race in the highly competitive Western Conference, the Trail Blazers used a 26-4 run to erase an early six-point deficit. The Jazz built a quick 8-2 lead, but Darius Miles sank a long jumper to ignite the decisive burst. Miles, Randolph and Damon Stoudamire dominated the run, combining for all but two points. "We came out with a lot of energy, everyone was on the same page," Randolph said. "Everyone played well." "I was disappointed from the start of the game," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. Portland climbed within a game of ninth-place Utah and trails Denver by 2 1/2 games for the final playoff spot in the West. "This was a really nice win," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Considering that Utah is one of the teams we are trying to catch for the playoffs, this was a real important win, perhaps a must-win." Randolph admitted the team is thinking about its playoff positioning. "You see (the Denver loss on the scoreboard), but we are still trying to focus," Randolph said. "Every game is big now," Cheeks added. "We're chasing Utah to get to Denver for the eighth spot in the playoffs. We have to focus on what is ahead." Miles finished with 19 points and Derek Anderson and Stoudamire had 13 apiece for the Trail Blazers, who matched their most lopsided win of the season. Raja Bell had 21 points before being ejected following a fourth-quarter scuffle for Utah, which has dropped two in a row following a four-game winning streak. There has been some bad blood between the teams this season and the frustation boiled over when Bell shoved Shareef Abdur-Rahim out of bounds on a potential breakaway. As Abdur-Rahim hit the floor, a trio of Blazers confronted Bell. "From what I saw, Raja fouled Rahim hard, which you have to do in an open-court situation, and three guys went after him," Sloan said. "You have to let them know you are not afraid." "There ain't no place for a foul like that," Anderson said. "A hard foul is a hard foul. If we would have taken him out like that, he would have felt the same way." The win was Portland's third in the last 11 meetings with the Jazz and the 70 points were the fewest scored by Utah against the Trail Blazers. Utah trailed 45-37 at halftime but scored the first six points of the third quarter. Miles had six points in an 8-0 run and Portland scored the final 10 points of the period to turn the game into a rout. Utah All-Star Andrei Kirilenko had a rough night, scoring 10 points on 2-of-19 shooting.
