Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- If the Milwaukee Bucks thought they were going to catch the Cleveland Cavaliers tired or flat, they were proven wrong early and late. The Cavaliers scored 39 points in the opening period - their biggest quarter in nearly two years - and Zydrunas Ilgauskas and LeBron James keyed a decisive spurt in the final five minutes of a 106-97 triumph over the Bucks. Cleveland was coming off a draining victory in New Orleans on Friday and did not return home until 4 a.m. Despite the quick turnaround, the Cavaliers came out firing on all cylinders. Behind 15 points from Ilgauskas and eight from Carlos Boozer, Cleveland bolted to a 39-28 lead. The 39 points were the most in a period for the Cavaliers since totaling 42 in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 26, 2002. "That was unreal," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said of getting in so late. "We gave them off until 5 (o'clock). I didn't expect us to come out with that kind of energy." "Our big three came tonight to play and we were able to pull out the win," James said referring to himself, Ilgauskas and Boozer. "Earlier in the season, we would have lost that game, and everybody here knows that." The Cavaliers preserved the advantage through three quarters, but a 7-0 run early in the fourth period gave the Bucks an 83-81 lead. The game was still tight with just over four minutes remaining when James buried a fadeaway jumper and grabbed a rebound. Ilgauskas followed with two free throws and a short jumper for a 101-93 lead with 3:03 left. Milwaukee got no closer than six points the rest of the way. Ilgauskas finished with 29 points for Cleveland, which has won seven of nine and moved into a three-way tie for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. "He's going to the basket," Silas said of Ilgauskas. "Early, he wasn't bending his knees on defense, now he's bending his knees and shoring up the middle. You can't think of too many centers playing much better than he is right now." James had 24 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals and Boozer recorded his 28th double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. "It shows how much we've grown, to be able to play such an emotional game last night and have a big win against a really good team and come back here and play another really good team and beat them, too," Boozer said. "It just shows our growth and maturity." Michael Redd scored 18 points but made just 7-of-18 shots for Milwaukee, which fell to 10-21 on the road. "He's one of the best shooters in this league and one of the best guards in the Eastern Conference," James said. "The best thing you can try to do is to keep trying to get a hand up in his face because he shoots the ball so well and so quick." Milwaukee had won the previous five meetings between the teams. "We didn't come out with the intensity that we should have throughout the whole game," Redd said. "It's just a bad loss for us right now."
