Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Yao Ming muscled his way to his first win over the Dallas Mavericks. Yao scored 29 points, including a pivotal three-point play with 15 seconds left, as the Houston Rockets defeated the Mavericks for the first time in seven meetings, 101-98. The Mavericks erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter and tied the game, 92-92, on a basket by Eduardo Najera with 33 seconds to go. The Rockets went ahead to stay when the 7-5 Yao took a pass from Steve Francis and overpowered a pair of defenders for a basket, drawing a foul from Dirk Nowitzki. "There is a Chinese phrase 'resolve is victory,'" Yao said through an interpreter. "I saw everybody focusing on Steve because he wanted to break down the defense, so I thought I would help out. That's just the most obvious big play of the game. Over the course of the game, there are a lot of big plays." The Mavericks cut the deficit to 98-97 on a 3-pointer by Antoine Walker with four seconds left, but Houston put away the game on a pair of free throws by Clarence Weatherspoon and another by Cuttino Mobley. The Mavericks had dominated the Rockets for the past two seasons and were the only NBA team Yao had never beaten. The drought ended Sunday, despite 28 turnovers by the Rockets. "Obviously the ballhandling was suspect, but we were a lot tougher today," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "A lot of things were going wrong. Our guys found a way to win tonight." The Mavericks started the game with 6-10 Scott Williams guarding Yao, who took advantage and had 14 points in the first quarter. "Yao ate us alive when we started the game in man-to-man," Nowitzki said. "Yao won the game for Houston and he is rapidly becoming a great player." Steve Nash scored 22 points for the Mavericks (39-23), who have lost one more game than they did all of last season. The Mavericks went winless on a three-game road trip against likely playoff teams. "We competed today," Nash said. "That hunger and desire are important factors for this team. We made some key mistakes and maybe we didn't deserve to win." Nowitzki had 18 points and nine of the Mavericks' franchise-record 20 steals, but the biggest theft of the game came by Houston. After Yao's go-ahead basket, Jim Jackson, who finished with 24 points, stole an inbounds pass from Walker, leading to a free throw by Francis. Yao and Weatherspoon each had 10 rebounds, leading to a 48-35 edge for the Rockets. Francis 11 points and eight assists. Nash sank five free throws in a 23-second span to tie the game at 90-90 with 61 seconds left. The first three of those came when he was fouled on a 3-pointer.
