Game StorySEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons have made a habit of having at least one successful West Coast trip in each of the last three seasons. In a dominating defensive showing, the Pistons concluded a season-high five-game road trip by forcing 20 turnovers in an 86-65 dismantling of the Seattle SuperSonics, who tied a team record for fewest points. In the last three seasons, Detroit has had mixed results on its two annual West Coast trips. In 2001-02, the Pistons were 0-5 on the first trip and 3-1 on the second one. Last season, they were 3-1 on their first trip and 0-5 on the second trek. Detroit has continued the trend this season, going 1-3 on a four-game swing in November and 4-1 in this one. Already among the NBA's top defensive teams, the Pistons posted their third straight blowout win and held foes to an average of 76.2 points in the five games. "This is mind-boggling when you consider all the tough games we've lost and the idea of coming out here late in the season," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "With everybody that we are playing, fighting for the playoffs and you know the way the West has beaten up on the East. ... It was good. It was real good." "We really got after it the last three games," Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter said. "Defensively I don't remember being this good in a stretch in a long time." One of seven teams with a winning road record, Detroit opened this swing with a 12-point win over the Los Angeles Clippers. After an eight-point loss in Utah, the Pistons forced 52 turnovers in the final three games. "I think getting off to that great start in LA is the key to everything," Detroit guard Chauncey Billups said. "I thought that set the tone for the entire trip. We got a great win and we're playing good basketball right now." One night after holding the Nuggets without a basket for nearly 12 1/2 minutes in a 31-point rout, the Pistons forced 15 first-half turnovers to take a 51-33 lead into the locker room. "(Detroit) is a good defensive team and they showed how they can disrupt and take you completely out of your offense," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "This team is built on defense, they take pride in that and they showed why they are one of the top teams in the league." Rasheed Wallace was the main beneficiary of Detroit's aggressive defense as he scored most of his 18 points on easy baskets. Tayshaun Prince added 14 and Ben Wallace 12 and 13 rebounds. Seattle, which returned from a four-game road trip, played without leading scorer Ray Allen, who had the flu. The SuperSonics got 16 points from Rashard Lewis but tied the team low set November 18, 1990 against the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite arriving in Seattle at 3 a.m., the Pistons were dominant from the start. They forced eight turnovers in the first quarter and seized a 25-13 advantage. Without Allen, the SuperSonics never got going. They committed 20 turnovers for the fifth time, went scoreless in the final 3:58 of the first half and lost for the seventh time in eight games.
