Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- In a battle of New York point guards, Jamaal Tinsley made his points in overtime. Tinsley made a pair of clutch jumpers in the extra session as he outdueled Rod Strickland and lifted the Indiana Pacers to their sixth straight victory, a 94-84 triumph over the Toronto Raptors. Tinsley and Strickland engaged in a terrific battle of point guards. The aging Strickland had the upper hand in regulation, eventually collecting 14 points and a season-high 16 assists. "The matchup, the stats don't matter," Strickland said. "He won and I lost. That's it." After All-Stars Jermaine O'Neal and Vince Carter traded multiple misses at the end of regulation, Tinsley took over in overtime. He opened the period by beating the shot clock with a 3-pointer, giving Indiana the lead for good at 84-81. "Jamaal hit a big 3-pointer," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "That got us started." O'Neal made a jumper and Reggie Miller also beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer for an 89-81 advantage with 2:46 left. Raptors rookie Chris Bosh scored, but Tinsley answered by drilling a foul-line jumper with 82 seconds remaining. "I'm just trying to make plays," Tinsley said. "The shooting is all confidence. The guys look to me to either create or take the shot." Tinsley collected 12 points, 11 assists and five steals. In his last nine games, he is averaging 12.3 points and 7.6 assists. Returning from a 4-0 road trip, the Pacers improved the NBA's best record to 48-16 as they matched last season's win total. Ron Artest scored 23 points and O'Neal added 20 and 18 rebounds. "Our guys are doing a good job staying in the present, dealing with the next opponent," Carlisle said. "For us, getting to the playoffs and winning in the playoffs is what it's all about." Carter scored 21 of his 28 points in the first half and Bosh added 19 for the Raptors, who were outrebounded, 50-36. They have lost 12 of 14 to fall into 10th place in the Eastern Conference. "We didn't come to play in overtime," said Raptors forward Donyell Marshall, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds. "We thought the game was over. It seems like we just gave up." A seesaw fourth quarter saw the Raptors open a 73-66 lead behind eight straight points from Marshall and the Pacers use an 11-0 run fueled by seven points from O'Neal to reclaim a 79-75 advantage with 2:28 to go. Bosh tied it with two free throws and a follow shot. Artest made two free throws for an 81-79 lead at the 2:09 mark, but Strickland tied it with a tough driving layup 15 seconds later. "I'm just trying to get comfortable with each game," said Strickland, who was playing just his third game with Toronto after being waived by Orlando. "It'll come." The lowest-scoring team in the league, Toronto rode Strickland's 11 assists to a 50-46 halftime lead but managed just 13 points in the third quarter.
