Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers began a crucial stretch of games with a message. Damon Stoudamire tied a season high with 28 points and Zach Randolph had 18 and 11 rebounds as the Trail Blazers climbed out of an early hole and rolled to a 92-79 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Portland (31-33) entered Wednesday three games out of the playoff race with 19 games remaining and is in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 1982. It began a potentially decisive five-game stretch against playoff-bound opponents in impressive fashion. "It's a good win, not only because we are starting some tough games, but we know we can play with the elite teams," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "These next four game are going to be huge for us." The Trail Blazers host Western Conference-leading Sacramento on Friday before visiting Minnesota, Milwaukee and league-leading Indiana. The Timberwolves scored the game's first nine points and had a seven-point lead early in the second period before the Trail Blazers scored 23 of the next 29 points. Randolph scored eight points and Ruben Patterson had half of his 12 during the stretch. Shareef Abdur-Rahim capped it with a three-point play for a 41-31 advantage with 91 seconds left in the first half. The Timberwolves (45-20) got no closer than seven points in the second half and lost for the third time in four games. They have fallen three games behind Sacramento for the best record in the West. Stoudamire made 11-of-19 shots, including 6-of-10 3-pointers, and handed out seven assists in his first home game since voluntarily taking a drug test for an Oregon newspaper. He left the floor to a standing ovation in the fourth quarter. "I just want to be aggressive and make things happen," Stoudamire said. "That's what a want for the rest of the year. To help my teammates and make things happen." "He deserved the ovation he got," Cheeks said. "The way he played tonight is the way we need him to play every game." Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Sam Cassell had 15 and nine assists for Minnesota, which shot less than 40 percent (33-of-84) from the floor. "They were more aggressive than we were," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "They got extremely aggresive and we really couldn't (hit a shot)." Timberwolves guard Latrell Sprewell, who scored 31 points on 11-of-23 shooting in Tuesday's win over Seattle, made just 4-of-13 shots en route to 10 points. "We seemed to lose energy as the game went on," he said. "We missed shots that we normally make. It felt like we could have been in this game."
