Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Becoming a new father seems to have made a new player of Gordan Giricek. Giricek scored a career-high 33 points on 11-of-18 shooting as the Utah Jazz began a key five-game road trip with a 99-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Giricek missed a pair of games last weekend due to the birth of his first child but he returned Monday, scoring 21 points in a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, his second straight 20-point game. He had 10 points in a victory over Golden State on Wednesday before carrying the Jazz to an important victory. "Once I step on the court, I try to forget all things, problems or good things," he said. "I'm professional, I have to play hard and try to forget everything off the court." Utah (34-32) remained one-half game behind Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. It began an eight-day trek without coach Jerry Sloan, who was with his cancer-stricken wife. "He's on our minds," Jazz guard Raja Bell said. "We're really concerned for his wife and our prayers are going out to them, but we understand and fully support that Jerry has to handle his family first and I don't think anyone here would have it any other way." Utah has not missed the playoffs since 1983 and has 18 games left to secure it 21st consecutive postseason appearance. It faces Denver on the road in another important game Sunday. The Jazz led by as many as 11 points but were clinging to a three-point lead with 2:10 left before scoring nine of the next 12 points. Giricek made a pair of baskets during the burst and converted a three-point play with 50 seconds left for a 95-86 cushion. Bell scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of clutch shots in the final minutes, as Utah won for the seventh time in nine games. "Our offense is a motion offense and anybody who has the chance to shoot it, shoots it," Bell said. "I would up with the ball in my hand. They were making a push at us, but we found away to win." Amare Stoudemire added 26 points and 15 rebounds and Joe Johnson scored 23 points as Phoenix, which has the worst record in the Western Conference, lost for the 12th time in 15 games. "You can't just come out and give up 100, 99, 105 (points) or whatever it is every night and think we are going to win," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Somehow we have to get better defensively, and hopefully from here on out we can do better." Giricek is averaging just over 10 points per game since he was acquired by the Jazz in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies on February 19. He nearly matched his average in the first quarter, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Utah never trailed after scoring seven straight points early the first quarter, capped by a jumper from Tom Gugliotta that made it 16-9.
