Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Hubie Brown got to cross out another item on his team's to-do list. Brown's surging Memphis Grizzlies won their seventh straight game, a 98-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, as Pau Gasol scored 24 points and tied a career high with 18 rebounds. Extending their team record for total wins (41) and home victories (25), the Grizzlies (41-24) clinched their first .500 season. "This was our first goal," Brown said. "Now our second goal is to get a playoff spot. The magic number moves down to 10. We want to do that, that's our next goal. We can't think anything beyond that." James Posey added 19 points and nine rebounds Memphis, which has won 16 of its last 19 games and sits in the fifth spot in the Western Conference. The Grizzlies went 4-0 against the Clippers to sweep a season series from a Western Conference team for the first time in franchise history. "We're not thinking about records anymore," Gasol said. "We're just looking for more wins. All we're trying to get is a better spot in the playoffs." It was s somber, distracted Gasol who took the court. Before the game, a moment of silence was observed in response to Thursday's terrorist attacks on railway stations in Madrid. The Grizzlies players wore black shoes, headbands and armbands. Gasol, a native of spain, also wore a black band on his jersey. "I didn't start very well, my mind wasn't where I wanted it to be," he said. "I was a little out of the game for a quarter, then I picked it up late in the game and started to play the way I'm supposed to." Quentin Richardson had 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Clippers lost for the seventh time in their last eight games. They have dropped three in a row overall and 12 straight Western Conference contests since a 115-105 victory at Dallas on December 20. Los Angeles opened the fourth quarter with a 15-5 run to overcome a nine-point deficit and take a 78-77 lead with 4:53 left. The spurt started and ended with baskets by Richardson. The Grizzlies answered with a 13-4 run, taking a 90-82 lead on a layup by Bonzi Wells with 1:54 remaining. Wells had nine of his 19 points in the surge. "They played hard on defense, they played hard the entire game," Richardson said. "They made a couple of plays down the stretch, they made the plays when they needed to, we didn't." Memphis was in control most of the way and took a 47-37 lead with 1:34 left in the second quarter. It kept that advantage through most of the third period, taking a 72-63 lead into the final 12 minutes.
