Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- All-Star Paul Pierce kept the Boston Celtics close and his teammates responded late in an important come-from-behind victory. Pierce scored 26 of his 37 points in the second half as the Celtics closed the game with a 14-0 run and handed the Washington Wizards their sixth straight loss, 111-102. Etan Thomas' dunk gave the Wizards a 102-97 lead with 3:46 to play before Pierce scored five straight points to tie the game with just under two minutes remaining. "He's ballin', man. (He) couldn't miss there in the second half," teammate Ricky Davis said. "So we just kept giving him the ball and finally he got to the line, and that was key." Following an offensive foul on Gilbert Arenas, Davis buried a 16-foot jumper, and Boston never trailed again. Chucky Atkins and Davis combined for Boston's last nine points and finished with 17 and 15, respectively. Pierce also added 12 rebounds and was 13-of-28 from the floor. "Everybody was focused in on me, especially late in the game, and that's when these other guys will kill you," Pierce said. "They stepped up to the challenge and got it done." Gilbert Arenas led Washington with 28 points, eight assists and five steals. Jerry Stackhouse scored 19 points on 8-of-22 shooting, missing his last four shots down the stretch. "We turned the ball over the second half and we allowed too many points in the fourth quarter," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "But, you know, that's who we are right now." The Celtics (30-38) won for the seventh time in nine games and moved into a virtual three-way tie with the Knicks and Heat for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "For the next three days we can sit and watch everybody else beat up on each other while we move up in the standings," Celtics coach John Carroll said. "This has been the craziest year ever. You're going to have two or three teams in the playoffs that are not even above .500. So, hey, I'll take it regardless. Things happen for a reason." Boston has won all three meetings with Washington this season. "All non-playoff teams we must have," Pierce said. "We must win games, and then the teams that we're battling for are the most important games." The Celtics looked flat for 3 1/2 quarters, trailing by 10 points on two occasions. The Wizards used an 8-0 run to take a 102-97 lead with 3:46 remaining, but they did not score again.
