Game StoryTORONTO (Ticker) -- Vince Carter did most of his scoring early and Jalen Rose did most of his late, leading the Toronto Raptors to a 101-84 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Carter scored 17 of his 32 points in the first quarter and Rose, playing for the first time in five weeks, had 16 of his 23 in the final period. The Raptors won for just the third time in 16 games. They hope that a return of Rose, who was on the injured list with a broken hand, helps their sagging playoff hopes. Toronto moved up to 10th in the Eastern Conference playoff race, one-half game ahead of Philadelphia. Despite a slow start, Rose made 10-of-20 shots from the field and added seven rebounds and seven assists in his first game since February 8. "My production is needed whether it be statistical, or emotion, or whatever I'm going to bring to the table," Rose said. "It felt good to be out there among the guys and I can't imagine what it would be like not to play this game." Carter's big first quarter included a dunk with 1:39 remaining that made it 32-20. For Carter, the presence of Rose relieved some of the burden. "It's another scorer, another guy that is going to gain respect from the defense by just being out there - especially early in the game," Carter said. "Atlanta was a little hesitant to double-team us down in the post." The Hawks responded with a 16-0 run bridging the opening two periods, keyed by six points from Stephen Jackson. But the Raptors recovered as a 3-pointer by Morris Peterson gave them a 54-44 halftime lead. Toronto built its lead to 16 points in the third quarter, taking a 69-53 advantage on a 3-pointer by Donyell Marshall with 5:01 left. A basket by Rose with 6:43 to play gave Toronto its biggest lead at 91-73. "The final score was not indicative of the game," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "We came back a couple of times but the game separated from us in the third quarter. We had lots of good looks but couldn't hit it enough." The Raptors are in the midst of a four-game road trip that continues with games against Utah and Chicago, and they put added importance to a game against a team out of playoff contention. "We felt this was as close to a must-win game as possible," Rose said. "We would be big-time disappointed if we did not make the playoffs." Jason Collier had 18 points and Chris Crawford 15 for the Hawks, who have lost 12 of the last 13 games against the Raptors.
