Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bo Outlaw gave Kyle Korver a Memphis mugging. Outlaw's strip of Korver led to James Posey's go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left as the Memphis Grizzlies rallied for an 82-79 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Grizzlies (42-25) erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and clinched the first winning season in franchise history with their eighth win in nine games. But they may have gotten a little help. Memphis forward Pau Gasol missed the second of two free throws with 27 seconds to go, leaving Philadelphia with a 79-78 edge. After a timeout, the 76ers got the ball to Korver, a rookie on the floor for his free-throw shooting. "We always go for the steal first," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "We try to make the steal within two, three or four seconds. Then we foul." Outlaw swarmed Korver and appeared to commit a couple of intentional fouls, hoping to stop the clock. But none was called and the ball came free, with Earl Watson finding Posey for a driving layup. "We'll take it," Posey said. "You just never know what will happen out there during the course of a game. We were able to pull it off." The 76ers were very upset with the non-call. "I don't really want to say anything and give (the league) any more of my money, but everybody knows what happened out there. It was bad," Sixers guard Allen Iverson said. "Their whole bench, everybody on the court, they're yelling, 'Foul, foul.' And he didn't just foul him one time; he fouled him three or four times." "I think if that's Allen Iverson or myself, they make the call," guard Eric Snow said. "(Kyle's) a rookie and they gave him no respect." Korver missed an open jumper and Posey sank two free throws with 7.8 seconds to play. The Sixers had one last chance, but Iverson - who was scoreless in the second half - missed a 3-pointer. Gasol had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Outlaw scored 15 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who swept the Sixers for the second time in the last three seasons. Memphis is one-half game behind fifth-place Dallas in the Western Conference. Aaron McKie scored 22 points and Kenny Thomas added 20 and 12 boards for the Sixers (28-40), whose postseason hopes are dwindling. They are three games out of the final playoff spot in the East with just 14 games remaining. "It's really hard," Sixers coach Chris Ford said. "We played well throughout the game, and to lose on a play like that, it's really tough." Iverson scored a season-low 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. The three-time scoring champion had missed the last four games with a knee injury, sitting out Sunday's loss at Detroit when he was told by Ford he would not start because of conditioning concerns. "I was out of rhythm," said Iverson, who had 10 assists. "I didn't have any kind of rhythm tonight, so I tried to concentrate on creating for my teammates." In the third quarter, the Grizzlies trailed by as many as 13 points and saw guard Bonzi Wells ejected for throwing the ball into the stands after becoming upset with a call. But Memphis closed to 66-57 entering the final period, then used a 14-4 run to take a 71-70 lead with 5:55 to go. "Our spurt in the fourth quarter of (14-4) was with the second group, who did a terrific job," Brown said. Snow's jumper and two free throws gave the Sixers a 77-75 lead with 2:41 left. Thomas scored between free throws by Gasol, setting up the finish.
