Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Stephen Jackson carried the Atlanta Hawks to a huge lead before Steve Nash nearly brought the Dallas Mavericks all the way back. Jackson and Nash traded huge halves as the Hawks held on for a shocking 111-110 victory over the Mavericks. A Texas native, Jackson scored 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting in the first half, helping the Hawks to a 69-44 lead. But he managed just five points in the second half, when Nash looked like a scoring machine. "That's the best half in my life," Jackson said. Nash scored 25 of his 30 after intermission. He netted 19 points in the fourth quarter, including a layup with 34 seconds remaining that pulled the Mavericks within 111-110. Jason Terry missed a tough fadeaway and Dirk Nowitzki grabbed the rebound, giving the Mavericks an opportunity to post the biggest comeback win in franchise history. Following a foul and a timeout, Nash drove to the basket, drew a host of defenders in the lane and missed the rim on a tough lefthanded runner as time expired. "It wasn't the shot I wanted," said Nash, who went 12-of-19 from the field. "I will be seeing that one in my head for a while." "Nash was the key to their run," Jackson said. "He got open shots and got the ball to Dirk. We did a good job on the switch and made him take a bad shot." Terry collected 25 points and 10 assists and Bob Sura had 19 and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who swept the season series from the Mavericks for the first time since 1997-98. Nowitzki had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Antoine Walker 12 and 12 for Dallas, which lost for the fifth time in eight games. "I can't really say why we lost," Nash said. "We play against guys as good as them every night. We couldn't afford to lose and we did. There's no excuse for us being down 25 points to that team." Sura's jumper less than two minutes into the second half gave the Hawks their biggest lead at 75-49. It still was a 22-point game with 3:33 left in the period, but the Mavericks started to gather momentum by using a 11-3 run to close the quarter. "We talked at halftime that they were going to make a run," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "They are really potent offensively." Michael Finley's dunk with 9:21 to play brought the deficit under double digits for the first time since the opening quarter and pulled the Mavericks within 94-85. Finley netted 17 points and rookie Marquis Daniels 11 off the bench for the Mavericks, who shot 49 percent (46-of-94). Jackson came out on fire, scoring 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the first quarter as the Hawks built a 40-25 lead. He continued his hot shooting in the second quarter, going 5-of-7. "He was the hot man going into the game," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We told everyone he was hot. We never came close to guarding him in the first half."
