Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Robert Traylor and rookie David West didn't start at forward for the New Orleans Hornets. But they finished off the Philadelphia 76ers. Traylor had 18 points and 10 rebounds and West added a career-high 15 and nine as the shorthanded Hornets overpowered the 76ers, 104-80. The Hornets were without starting forwards Jamal Mashburn and P.J. Brown, both of whom sat out with injuries. Stacey Augmon and George Lynch started at forward for New Orleans as coach Tim Floyd tried to match up with Philadelphia's smaller tandem. West and Traylor jump-started the offense in the second quarter, when the Hornets missed nine straight shots and eventually fell behind, 47-38. With some help from center Jamaal Magloire, New Orleans began to use its size advantage and closed to 53-51 at halftime. "We had special play from those two guys off the bench," Floyd said. "Really, our whole front line. The minutes George Lynch gave us on Kenny Thomas, and the minutes Magloire played were outstanding." In the second half, the Hornets mauled the 76ers, piling up a 44-34 edge in points in the paint and a 35-14 bulge in second-chance points. New Orleans had 23 offensive rebounds to Philadelphia's 22 defensive rebounds. "Our big guys were real dominant," said Traylor, who tied his career best of seven offensive rebounds. "Big Cat (Magloire) had a double-double, I had a double-double, David was one rebound away ... That's the way we've got to come out and play, be aggressive in the paint and make things happen." The Hornets scored on eight consecutive possessions during their third-quarter rally, seven after offensive rebounds. West, who was 7-of-7 from the field, scored four times on follow shots in that span. "That was a critical stretch for us because we weren't scoring the first six minutes of the quarter. We were really struggling," Floyd said. "We got back to running our (offense), but most important was offensive rebounding." "Philadelphia is a pretty good offensive rebounding team," West said, "but we think we're pretty good, too. We felt we could put pressure on that glass. We tried to keep Kenny Thomas off the glass and knew we had a chance to win if we did." Thomas, the NBA's eighth-best rebounder, grabbed just three in 39 minutes as his streak of 10 double-figure rebounding games ended. "(The Hornets) pounded us on the glass," said All-Star guard Allen Iverson, who led the 76ers with 20 points. "They banged us. They outhustled us. In this league, when guys miss shots, you've got to get the rebound, because if you give them another one, nine times out of 10 they'll make it." Baron Davis led New Orleans (36-32) with 20 points, 15 after halftime. He was 4-of-4 from 3-point range in the second half, including a third-quarter buzzer beater and another with 11:18 remaining to cap a 19-2 run that give New Orleans a 76-64 lead. Magloire had 19 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double in the last 11 games. Philadelphia is 2-12 on the road since winning at New Orleans on January 21. It is 3 1/2 out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "I definitely think it is slipping away from us," Iverson said. "We've got to do something about it if we're going to have a chance."
