Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce has been to the playoffs before and knows what it takes to get there. The Denver Nuggets had better learn fast. Pierce collected 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Boston Celtics past the Nuggets for 10th time in the last 11 meetings, 104-100. An All-Star who has had huge postseason performances, Pierce had a dunk that gave the Celtics the lead for good at 98-96 with 4:59 remaining. He nailed a twisting, hanging shot from the right elbow with 25 seconds remaining to give Boston a 103-99 lead to seal the victory on St. Patrick's Day. "We're giving ourselves a chance to win every game down the stretch and that's all you can ask for," Pierce said. "We're playing steady and we're not beating ourselves." Chucky Atkins added season-highs of 21 points and 10 assists for the Celtics (31-38), who are one-half game out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "Every game is a playoff game for us," Atkins said. "If we expect to make it, we've got to approach it with a sense of urgency. Somebody else on this team is going to have to score besides Paul Pierce. Everybody is going to be called upon to step up and make plays." Boston limited Denver to just 11 fast break points and made 10-of-16 3-pointers on the other end. "It was just a gutsy win," Boston coach John Carroll said. "(Their transition game) was our No. 1 key going into the game and I thought we did a pretty good job. I challenged the guys at halftime and I thought we played great defense." The Nuggets (36-33) were tentative in the final five minutes, when they did not score from the field. Looking for their first playoff berth since 1995, they remained 1 1/2 games in front of Utah and Portland in the race for the West's final postseason berth. Denver held a 56-49 halftime lead, but Boston used a 26-8 run to open the third period and grab a 75-64 lead. "The game was decided in the third quarter when they outscored us 26-8 and I don't believe we had a team foul in those first seven minutes, that is how soft we came out and how unaggressive we came out," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points for Denver, which placed six players in double figures. The Nuggets made just 3-of-17 3-pointers. "When Paul hit that last shot, it killed us," Anthony said. "We were supposed to win this game to start our road trip off right." Nene left the game with 7:59 left in the third quarter after spraining his left ankle. He is listed as day-to-day. "I'm worried about my guy," Denver center Marcus Camby said. "Nene's a warrior. If he can go he will be out there."
