Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers got to 50 by keeping the Portland Trail Blazers in the 70s. The Pacers became the first team to win 50 games, holding the Trail Blazers scoreless in the final five minutes of an 80-71 victory, their eighth win in nine games. Ron Artest scored 21 points and Reggie Miller added 18 for the Pacers (50-17) who gave coach Rick Carlisle his third straight 50-win season with a dominant display of defense down the stretch. "It's hard to get 50," said Carlisle, who won 50 games each of the last two seasons with the Detroit Pistons. "Two years ago in Detroit, we had to win three in a row to get 50. Last year, we dodged a bullet at the end of the game when a shot was missed." Indiana tied a franchise record by allowing just eight points in the fourth quarter. It limited the opponent to 75 or fewer for the 12th time this season. "We were forcing jumpers there at the end, but give Indiana credit - they played great at the defensive end," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. A 3-pointer by Shareef Abdur-Rahim gave Portland its last lead at 71-70 with 5:04 to play. Artest answered with a 3-pointer to give Indiana the lead for good. With Al Harrington harassing Indiana native Zach Randolph, the Trail Blazers could not get anything going and matched their lowest point total of the season. "I didn't get a lot of plays run for me down the stretch," said Randolph, who scored 16 points. "I don't know what happened." Jermaine O'Neal sank a jumper for a 75-71 lead at the 3:12 mark. Miller provided the dagger with a transition 3-pointer with 1:45 left before adding a pair of free throws. Portland missed its last five shots while committing four turnovers. "We're starting to establish an identity for ourselves, and it starts on defense," said Miller, who made 7-of-12 shots. "There were three seconds left every time we looked up at (the shot clock). That's not good," Portland guard Derek Anderson said. "We lacked execution in the fourth quarter." The Pacers surpassed last season's win total and moved 1 1/2 games game ahead of the Sacramento Kings (49-19) in the race for the NBA's best record and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Kings visit Indiana on Friday. "We always knew we were capable of winning 50, but we really didn't talk about it," said O'Neal, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. "This was a big game and hopefully the beginning to a strong finish," Artest added. Damon Stoudamire scored 14 points for Portland (34-34), which had a four-game winning streak snapped and remained 1 1/2 games behind Denver in the race for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. The Trail Blazers played some defense of their own, blocking 12 shots. Theo Ratliff's repeated rejections in the second quarter helped Portland erase a 15-point deficit and close to 43-42 at halftime.
