Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Pau Gasol had a fantastic fourth quarter but could not come up with one more basket. Gasol scored 13 of his 21 points in the final period but missed a tying 3-point attempt in the waning seconds as the Memphis Grizzlies fell to the Seattle SuperSonics, 97-94. Ray Allen produced nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and Vladimir Radmanovic also scored 19 points for the SuperSonics, who handed the Grizzlies just their second loss in 10 games. Seattle had a 74-66 lead with 10:21 remaining before Memphis went on a 14-2 run and took a 80-76 lead on a technical free throw by James Posey with 5:37 to play. The teams went back and forth before Seattle took the lead for good, 90-88, on a layup by Radmanovic with 1:32 left. "We had the lead, we had control, we gave up control and then we had to make some plays, and that's what it came down to," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. The score was 90-89 before Brent Barry nailed a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc to beat the shot clock with a minute left. "To come in and beat this team is tough," Barry said of the Grizzlies, who fell to 26-9 at home. "The position that they are in, their dominance at home and the fact that they have been playing great since the break ... it's a big win for us to come in and grind one out." After Gasol made a finger roll with 12 seconds left to get Memphis within 95-94, Antonio Daniels answered with a pair of free throws to restore a three-point cushion. The Grizzlies had difficulty getting off a good shot and the 7-foot Gasol was forced to launch a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with Daniels in his face with just under three seconds left. The ball bounced high off the rim and Brent Barry grabbed the rebound to it. "No, (it wasn't designed for me)," Gasol said. "We needed one of our shooters to get a good look. But it ended up that way." "They defended the last play well," Memphis coach Hubie Brown added. "They held and grabbed onto one guy, so it took him out of the play." Seattle has won 30 of 35 meetings in the all-time series. The SuperSonics shot 69 percent in the first quarter (11-of-16) in building a 30-23 lead. They led by as many as 14 points in the second period and took a 56-44 cushion into the break. "We did a pretty good job tonight getting back in the fourth quarter, but they just made some big shots at the end," Gasol said. "We have to work hard and just do a better job in the first half to not put ourselves in that kind of position." Memphis was just 20-of-31 from the line while Seattle went 21-of-24. "We didn't come to play in the first half," said Grizzlies forward Shane Battier, who had nine points on 2-of-11 shooting. "We got down and put ourselves in a hole again. We made a lot of mistakes and missed free throws, and in a close game like that, it is the difference."
