Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Wally Szczerbiak rediscovered his stroke and the Minnesota Timberwolves rediscovered their winning ways. Szczerbiak scored season-high 24 points and made three of his team's six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves snapped a two-game slide with a 93-80 victory over the Phoenix Suns. A former All-Star and one of the better shooters in the NBA, Szczerbiak has had some trouble regaining his form since returning from a foot injury last month. He had scored in double figures just four times while shooting 40 percent from the field. Szczerbiak came off the bench to make 8-of-13 shots, including 4-of-5 from the arc. He sank consecutive 3-pointers to turn a seven-point advantage into an 86-73 bulge with 3:45 remaining. "I missed my first three shots, but at least I didn't get yanked out," Szczerbiak said. "It is all about getting into a flow or rhythm because I am a player that can knock down five or six in a row." Minnesota shot 8-of-14 from the arc as they avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season. Fred Hoiberg made both his 3-pointers in the final period. Kevin Garnett had 17 points and 20 rebounds for the Timberwolves (47-22), who swept the season series from the Suns for the first time and have a two-game lead atop the Midwest Division over idle San Antonio. The 7-foot Garnett switched to point guard in the third quarter and sparked a 7-0 run that gave Minnesota a 50-43 lead. "Just to establish some flow and get out of the funk we were in as of late is why we needed this game." he said. "We have been going through a transition getting Wally (Szeczerbiak) in the lineup and the other guys acclimated. Sometimes it looks great like tonight, Sometimes it looks horrible like last night (a loss to San Antonio)." Shawn Marion had 21 points and 10 boards for the last-place Suns, who dropped to 14-21 at home with their fifth straight loss at America West Arena. They are guaranteed a losing record at home for the first time since their inaugural 1968-69 season. "We defended well, but then the offense went to heck," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "They are just a better team then we are and we are not going to outthink them or outsmart them." Minnesota held a 64-60 lead entering the fourth quarter before Latrell Sprewell and Hoiberg drilled 3-pointers in a 10-1 run. Phoenix closed to 76-71 on a jumper by Marion with 5:41 to play, but Hoiberg answered with another 3-pointer.
