Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons were finally part of a close game - until the fourth quarter. Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace each had 20 points and Mehmet Okur scored 10 of his 15 in a dominant fourth period as the Pistons extended their winning streak to seven games with a 94-75 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Detroit had won its last six games by an average of more than 22 points but was locked in a tight contest with Denver until the final period. The Pistons had a five-point edge after three quarters before turning up the defense that is turning their season around. "I think they've all bought into trying to win because of our defense," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "I think Rick (former coach Rick Carlisle) established that for two years here. They were a team that worked hard and tried to defend every night, so the guys that are back have tried to build on that and the new people are pretty unselfish guys." Detroit opened the period with a 24-5 run led by eight points from Okur. Rasheed Wallace scored five points during the spurt, eclipsing 10,000 career points on a jumper with 6:48 left. "I just felt good out there, especially second half," Okur said. "I just played just like myself out there, run down the floor and shoot the ball and play inside-outside. We have a lot of fun out there right now. We played great, we played like a team out there." The Pistons ended the stretch with 11 straight points and took their largest lead at 94-70 on a jumper by little-used reserve Darvin Ham with 2:47 left. Denver scored just 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting in the final 12 minutes, becoming the seventh straight team the Pistons have held to 75 or less. "I think we were playing solid defense for the whole game," said Detroit center Ben Wallace, who had 10 points and nine rebounds. "In the fourth quarter, we had wore them down and it really started to show. When we're playing like that, we're tough to beat." Wallace made 9-of-14 shots and Hamilton buried 9-of-11 as Detroit shot better than 53 percent (40-of-75) and handed out 30 assists. Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points for Denver. Nene, who was questionable with a sprained ankle, had 13 and 10 rebounds as the Nuggets lost for the 11th time in 15 games. Denver (36-34) is just one-half game ahead of Utah for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Nuggets shot just over 40 percent (33-of-81) from the floor, including 1-of-10 from 3-point range, and committed 22 turnovers leading to 25 points for the Pistons. "Detroit really dug in and we just didn't keep our poise," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Detroit is playing as well as any team in the league right now and they've proven that over the past couple of weeks. We had a chance in the second half to put some points on the board against a very good defensive team but just couldn't do it."
