Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers wore their throwback uniforms. But in any era, the same team always wins this crosstown battle. Kobe Bryant scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lakers over the Clippers for the 22nd time in 23 meetings, 106-100. The Lakers have won four straight overall. The lone loss came earlier this season when the Lakers came up short playing without Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone. "Well, we won, that's all I can say about the game," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We didn't look very fluid. I felt like they were not energized." The Lakers had taken a 76-66 lead after three quarters, but the Clippers tied it, 90-90, on a jumper by Doug Overton with 4:25 remaining. Bryant took over by scoring 12 of the Lakers' next 16 points. The All-Star guard also had five steals. "We were playing aggressive and playing the passing lanes, trying to make them uncomfortable," Bryant said. "We never really had them on the ropes, it was a dogfight." The Lakers were atrocious from the line for most of the game but made their last eight free throws to seal the contest. Superstar center Shaquille O'Neal made just 8-of-16 foul shots but sank two with 28 seconds left. "We still need to pick it up overall as a team," O'Neal said. "Tonight was just one of those days where we did not play up to our level." O'Neal scored 18 points and Gary Payton added 16 as all five starters were in double figures for the Lakers (46-23), who remained one game behind Minnesota for the second-best record in the Western Conference. The Lakers shot 53 percent (21-of-40) from the field in the first half on their way to a 52-49 halftime advantage. Karl Malone, in his fourth game back off the injured list, had a tough shooting game, scoring 14 points on 5-of-15 from the floor. "The competition is starting to get stiffer, so hopefully we can get back to where we need to be," Malone said. "We need to get better, no doubt about it." Corey Maggette scored 31 points for the Clippers, making 17-of-20 free throws. Quentin Richardson sat out with back spasms. "Our team came out and played hard shorthanded," Maggette said. "Down the stretch, they made some shots, and then Kobe kind of took over." The Lakers are in the midst of a seven-game homestand. Their next road game is April 2 vs. Seattle.
