Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jamal Crawford had a late prayer answered on his birthday. Crawford scored 25 points, including a tough fadeaway jumper in the final seconds, as the Bulls held on for an 87-81 victory over the New York Knicks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Crawford turned 24 on Saturday and helped Chicago to just its fifth winning streak of the season. The fourth-year guard handed out nine assists and made 10-of-20 shots from the floor, sinking the decisive basket. "We feel great right now," Crawford said. "Especially tonight because at the end of the game we pulled it out. It was good to get two in a row." The Bulls were clinging to an 83-81 lead with 26 seconds left after Knicks forward Kurt Thomas buried a jumper, but New York did not foul due to miscommunication between coach Lenny Wilkens and forward Shandon Anderson. "We were trying to foul," Wilkens said. "I don't what happened. We yelled for Shandon to foul when (the Bulls) were coming up the court. They just didn't hear me." "There was lot of noise out there," Anderson said. "It really messed up the situation. We know what we have to do in those situations and it should have been done." Crawford drove to the right baseline before firing a high-arching shot over defenders Penny Hardaway and Vin Baker that went in with 3.6 seconds to go. "It was one of those games where there were a lot of fatigued players out there," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "That makes it a good win. We found a way to win." The Bulls held on for the second win in as many nights against an Eastern Conference team trying to make the playoffs. They defeated the Toronto Raptors on Friday. "Even at this point, we can play spoiler," Crawford said. "Coach says we have nothing to lose." Eddy Curry scored 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds for Chicago, which has won consecutive games for the first time since since February 28-March 1. Thomas scored 17 points and Hardaway added 11 and 11 rebounds for New York (32-38), which fell into a tie with Cleveland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "Right now, every game has a sense of urgency," said Baker, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. "Each night is a playoff game. When we walk on the court, we know we're fighting for it." Stephon Marbury dished out nine assists but scored just 10 points and 4-of-18 shooting and seemed to injure his shoulder, adding to the injury woes of the Knicks. New York played without guard Allan Houston, who is sidelined with a bruised quadriceps, and lost forward Tim Thomas to a groin strain after the first quarter.
