Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers' new additions are driving them toward an unexpected playoff berth. Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored six of his 10 points during a key third-quarter run and Theo Ratliff had 14 points and six blocks as the Trail Blazers rolled to a 92-73 victory over the Orlando Magic, who were without All-Star Tracy McGrady. Portland (35-34) has gone 11-9 since acquiring Abdur-Rahim, Ratliff and guard Dan Dickau in the trade that sent Rasheed Wallace to the Atlanta Hawks on February 10. The team has been rejuvenated by the new faces, moving within one-half game of Denver and Utah for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "The addition of Ratliff has made this team so much better," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "You don't get easy shots against them. He's such a good-shot blocker, and it's not just the shots he blocks, it's the shots he misdirects that make the difference." "Guys are covering my back. I'm trying to do the same," said Ratliff, who has 45 blocks in his last eight games. "That's my job - play aggressive, try to detour any shots they have." The Trail Blazers had a 56-54 lead before ending the third quarter on 15-2 run. Darius Miles had two dunks early during the spurt and Abdur-Rahim scored the final six points, capping the decisive stretch with a short jumper for a 71-56 cushion with 34 seconds left. "Once we put a little run together, I think that deflated (the Magic)," Ratliff said. "Everyone did a great job of clamping down." Derek Anderson scored 24 points Zach Randolph added 16 and nine rebounds for Portland, which shot just under 50 percent (39-of-79) from the floor and collected 30 assists, including 11 form Damon Stoudamire. Ratliff led a dominant inside game by Portland, which scored 50 points in the paint and blocked 12 shots. "On defense, he's our general," Miles said. "The rest of us are like soldiers. I just try to play hard and match his intensity." Juwan Howard had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Magic, who struggled without McGrady. The NBA scoring leader was not with the team due to the death of his great-grandmother. Drew Gooden scored 14 points but made just 5-of-15 shots as Orlando shot just 32 percent (28-of-89), including 2-of-15 3-point range. "We just couldn't put the ball in the basket," Davis said. "When you shoot 31 percent from the floor and 65 percent (15-of-25) from the foul line, you're going to struggle to stay in games."
