Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan got some rest, thanks to a couple of teammates who started the game on the bench. Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and fellow reserve Malik Rose added 13 and triggered a pivotal run in the final 5 1/2 minutes as the San Antonio Spurs posted a 103-87 triumph over the Boston Celtics. Duncan, nursing a left quadriceps injury, was limited to 32 minutes. The two-time MVP was a force when he was in the game, collecting 26 points and 15 rebounds. The Spurs were cruising in the second half until a 7-2 spurt got Boston within 90-81 with 5 1/2 minutes left. Rose sank a jumper with 5:25 to go, igniting an 11-0 burst. Hedo Turkoglu, who capped the spurt with a 3-pointer with 3:14 left, scored all five of his points in the run. Paul Pierce scored 18 points on just 6-of-24 shooting for Boston, which has dropped 11 straight games against the Spurs and 12 in a row in San Antonio. Prior to losing 12 straight here, the Celtics had won 10 in a row. Boston (31-40) is 1 1/2 games behind the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers for the seventh place in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are two games behind sixth-place Miami. The Spurs (46-24) pulled within one-half game of the Los Angeles Lakers for third place in the West. San Antonio is two games ahead of fifth-place Dallas. Boston was within 32-31 following a jumper by Ricky Davis with 10:59 left in the half, but Duncan had a three-point play and short jumper to ignite a 7-0 run that helped the Spurs open a 57-53 halftime lead. The Celtics were within 62-60 midway through the third quarter when Ginobili took over, scoring 11 points in a 20-7 burst. Duncan added six in the spurt. The Spurs committed 21 turnovers but held a 48-31 rebounding advantage. San Antonio's bench shot 56 percent (14-of-25) and outscored Boston's reserves, 43-22.
