Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Without Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, the New Jersey Nets almost found a way to finally beat the Dallas Mavericks. But Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash made sure it didn't happen. Nowitzki's 15-foot jumper over Rodney Rogers with 27 seconds left gave the Mavericks the lead for good and Nash added a pair of free throws with one-tenth of a second left in a 101-98 victory over the Nets. Dallas extended its winning streak to eight games against New Jersey, which was supposed to have little chance to win Sunday without their injured All-Stars. Kidd is on the injured list with a bruised left knee and Martin missed his second straight game due to tendinitis of the left knee. "They (the Nets) have their two best players out, so they deserve the credit, not us," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "I always thought we were going to win the game but boy, was it in jeopardy right at the end." "I thought our guys fought their tails off in this game," said Nets coach Lawrence Frank. "It wasn't the outcome we would have liked but I thought we had a great chance to win it when you play like that." The Nets took a 98-97 lead after Kerry Kittles stole a pass and set up Rodney Rogers for a short bank shot in the lane with 33 seconds left. After calling a timeout, Dallas set up a play for Nowitzki, who used his four-inch height advantage to shoot over Rogers, who was starting for Martin. The Mavericks, who are known to be a soft defensive team, made two key defensive plays in the final 19 seconds. Nowitzki made the first, blocking a shot by Jason Collins underneath. Nash gave the ball back to New Jersey with a turnover, but negated it when he deflected an inbounds pass by Lucious Harris with five seconds left. Marquis Daniels picked off the deflection and lobbed it ahead to Nash, who was fouled with less than a second left. "I could have done some things to help Lucious out, but it didn't happen like that," said Richard Jefferson, who led the Nets with 22 points. "They (Dallas) just had the ball bounce their way a couple of times and we weren't fortunate to get a good look in the end." Harris, who again started at point guard for Kidd, scored a season-high 21 points and added five assists with just two turnovers. Rogers replaced Martin in the lineup and had 20 points and 10 rebounds. "Usually when the top guys are out, the other guys pick it up and that's what they did," said Nowitzki, who finished with 21 points. "They gave us a great battle and I don't really think we played our best." The Mavericks shot 70 percent in the fourth quarter, converting 14-of-20 shots. Daniels and Antawn Jamison, who finished with 20 points, combined to make 6-of-7 shots. A 12-2 run in the third quarter gave the Nets a 64-52 lead. Jefferson capped the spurt with a three-point play with 6:35 left. But the Mavs closed the quarter with an 8-2 run and pulled within 74-70 on a short jumper by rookie Josh Howard with three seconds left. A 3-pointer by Nash and layups by Jamison and Daniels gave Dallas an 81-76 lead with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
