Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- With Jermaine O'Neal getting injured, Reggie Miller and Jamaal Tinsley picked the right time to atone for recent poor efforts. Miller scored 17 points and Tinsley added 11 and eight assists as the Indiana Pacers avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season with a 101-77 rout of the Chicago Bulls. Indiana's backcourt of Miller and Tinsley combined for just 20 points on 7-of-28 shooting in the previous two games, going 2-of-14 from 3-point range. On Monday, Miller was 6-of-9 from the field and Tinsley 4-of-7, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. "We just didn't come out aggressively the last two games," Tinsley said. "We need to take the pressure off our big guys and tonight we came out looking for our shots." "Our execution the last couple of games just wasn't there," Miller added. "We haven't lost three in a row all year and I just wanted to get that winning taste back." With the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers involved in a romp, the loss of O'Neal to a sprained left knee early in the second quarter was not as acute as it could be. He leads Indiana with 20.6 points per game and 10.2 rebounds. The All-Star forward collided with Chicago's Ronald Dupree, bumping his knee against the rookie forward's thigh. O'Neal needed help to the locker room but later was able to put pressure on the leg. O'Neal, who had four points, six rebounds and three blocks, will be re-evaluated Tuesday. "It's a combination of a bruise and a sprain," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "At this point it's not deemed to be serious, but we'll see how it is tomorrow. I'm not certain of his status, but he's probably doubtful for Wednesday night (vs. Dallas)." Ron Artest and Al Harrington had 15 points apiece and Jeff Foster contributed 11 and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who have not lost three in a row since last April 8-13. Indiana extended its home winning streak against the Bulls to 10 games. Eddy Curry scored 13 points and Jannero Pargo had 12 as Chicago failed to stretch its winning streak to a season-high three games. Bulls coach Scott Skiles benched Curry and the other starters with 9:50 left in the third quarter, when Indiana held a 57-36 lead. "I don't think it was a bad decision; if you look at the game it was common sense," Skiles said. "If we had gotten a closer lead there would have been a reason to put some of them back in. We couldn't get close enough to do that." Tinsley snapped an 8-8 tie with a 3-pointer with 5:56 left in the first quarter and Miller followed with a jumper as the Pacers were off on a 19-6 run that gave them a 13-point lead. Curry's dunk cut Chicago's deficit to 33-26 with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter, but Harrington answered with a jumper and Foster drained two free throws to push Indiana's advantage back to 11 points. Kirk Hinrich's 3-pointer got the Bulls within single digits before Artest hit a driving hook, and the Pacers' lead never dipped below 10 points thereafter. With his team squandering double-digit leads in losses to Sacramento on Friday and Memphis on Saturday, Pacers forward Austin Croshere didn't want to take anything for granted. "We've had big leads and we've been letting them get away," said Croshere, who contributed nine points and seven rebounds. "Tonight we kept the lead and got the win that we needed."
