Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Given a chance, Nazr Mohammed and DerMarr Johnson showed what they can do against their former team. Mohammed had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Johnson keyed a big bench effort with 14 points as the New York Knicks overcame more injuries to post a 96-84 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Facing the Hawks for the first time since he was involved in a three-team trade on February 15, Mohammed scored all of his points in the first three quarters and finished 7-of-11 from the field in only 24 minutes. "He had some incentive," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He stayed within himself. I thought Nazr played great. It was a good game for him." Mohammed was caught in a numbers crunch in Atlanta. "Before the trade, Nazr was playing very well and he was in a situation where we had Shareef (Abdur-Rahim) and Theo (Ratliff) and we had a hard time getting him on the court," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "I'm really happy for him because he's getting the opportunity to play and he's showing what he can do." Johnson, who signed with New York after spending three seasons with the Hawks, got an opportunity after star guard Allan Houston was a late scratch. "There are only two guys left on the team that I played with," Johnson said. "It is a whole new team. No bad blood. I am trying to play in every game. I am trying to win every game. It was good to get this win." Johnson nailed a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter, giving New York a 75-68 lead. He drained another long-range jumper as the Knicks went on a game-breaking 16-4 run that started the fourth quarter. "DerMarr Johnson's three at the end of the third quarter was a big shot and that gave them momentum going into the fourth quarter," Stotts said. Houston was questionable with a left quadriceps contusion but participated in the warmup. "I would like to be playing, but it just can't happen right now," he said. "I have been very fortunate, playing a lot of minutes for a lot of years. This is going to allow me to be more rested and healthy for the playoffs, so I will take it. "I am just going to try to be a leader in the locker room. Hopefully, I can help us when I come back." Starting forward Tim Thomas missed the contest with a groin strain. The Knicks also lost Penny Hardaway, who had 14 points, to a right groin strain with 8:03 left. Stephon Marbury had 11 points and 11 assists and Kurt Thomas contributed 10 points for the Knicks, who got 40 bench points. Othella Harrington and Vin Baker contributed nine apiece. New York also claimed its eighth straight home win against Atlanta, which has not won at Madison Square Garden since March 22, 1999. The Knicks swept the season series from the Hawks for the first time since 1974-75. Stephen Jackson led Atlanta with 20 points and Chris Crawford had 18. The Hawks have lost 14 of their last 18 games. New York trailed, 29-25, after the first quarter but took a 50-44 edge into halftime.
