Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Yao Ming delivered when the Houston Rockets needed him most. Yao scored 10 of his 28 points in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime as the Rockets overcame blowing a 17-point lead to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers, 93-85, and snap a three-game losing streak. Steve Francis collected 22 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists for the Rockets, who improved to just 4-15 on the road against Western Conference opponents this season. Houston held a 59-42 advantage with 7:42 left in the third quarter before Portland roared back to take an 81-75 lead on a fast-break dunk by Ruben Patterson with 3:59 remaining. Following a timeout, Yao, who had 13 rebounds, tipped a miss to Maurice Taylor for a basket, then made a bank shot and a turnaround jumper to forge an 81-81 tie. "Yao came alive in the end for us," said Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley, who scored 10 points. "We made some key baskets, but he really did it for us." "Yao was great," Francis added. "We fed him the ball and we got the result we wanted. We fed the ball inside and he dominated, despite what was going on in the game." After Damon Stoudamire made a jumper to give Portland an 83-81 lead with 1:18 to play, Yao tied the game with a spinning baseline layup with 20 seconds left and Portland's Zach Randolph airballed a contested jumper just before the buzzer, sending the game into overtime. Yao dunked 15 seconds into overtime to give Houston the lead for good and added a hook shot and a block on Randolph to help the Rockets post their sixth victory in nine games. "That was a very tiring victory," Yao said. "The reason we played so well in the overtime is because our defense was so outstanding. Our defense was pretty good most of the game, but we lost it for part of the game." The Rockets felt that the Trail Blazers, namely center Theo Ratliff, were getting away with fouls on Yao. "I don't usually say this, but Yao Ming gets reffed differently than anybody in the league," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He gets no benefit of fouls in this league. I hate to say this after a win, but the things Ratliff was able to get away with tonight ... we attacked the basket just as much as them and the free throws are 33 to 11 (in Portland's favor)." "It was like WWF," Yao said of Ratliff's defense. Ratliff had two points and five rebounds in 35 minutes before fouling out in overtime. "He's 8-feet tall, man," Ratliff said. "I gotta do everything I can against him. He probably outweighs me by 100 poinds. I just gotta fight him, keep him off the box and just play him aggressive. That don't bother me none." Randolph had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Stoudamire scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for Portland, which failed to move into a three-way tie with Denver and Utah for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot. "The big thing is we don't want to let this disappointment carry over to Wednesday (vs. the Los Angeles Clippers)," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We've got to forget it and regroup." Francis scored 10 points in the first quarter to help stake Houston to a 22-11 lead. The Rockets shot 60 percent in the first half (22-of-37) and took a 48-38 advantage into the break.
