Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- With two of their clutch performers in street clothes, the struggling New Jersey Nets were desperate for a fourth-quarter hero, and Lucious Harris answered the call. Harris scored seven of his 19 points in the final four-plus minutes as the Nets snapped a three-game losing streak by hanging on to beat the Bulls, 84-81. New Jersey earned its first victory without All-Stars Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, who have sat out three straight games. Kidd is on the injured list while Martin is day-to-day, both with knee injuries. "To get a win and get over the hump without Jason and Kenyon, for us mentally that will help us out," Harris said. "I was open a lot tonight; fortunately the shots went in." "Lucious Harris was tremendous and gave us a phenomenal effort," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "I couldn't say enough good things about what he did tonight." The Bulls clung to a tight lead for much of the fourth quarter, but Harris' 3-pointer with 4:05 remaining gave the Nets the lead for good at 75-73. Rookie Kirk Hinrich's floater in the lane made it 79-77 with 2:39 left before a relentless Harris buried a running jumper give the Nets a four-point cushion with 1:40 to play. "These guys were part of two teams that went to the NBA Finals," Frank said. "They've been through it and showed a great deal of grit and I'm very proud of the effort." Jamal Crawford, who led the Bulls with 34 points, had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but his heavily contested 3-pointer fell short. "Coach drew up a good play," Crawford said. "The guy that was guarding the inbounder stayed with me, so I had a double-team. I was thinking I was quick enough to get around Jason Collins and get a good look; I just missed the shot." Richard Jefferson collected 20 points - 12 in the first quarter - and 10 rebounds to lead the Nets, who won all three meetings with the Bulls this season. It is New Jersey's second season sweep of Chicago in three years. "I got a good start," Jefferson said. "They focused on me so I had to give it to my teammates. We just wanted it more tonight than they did." Crawford made a career-high 6-of-11 3-pointers as the Bulls shot 62 percent (8-of-13) from the arc. Hinrich added nine points, 12 assists and a career high-tying four steals. The Nets outrebounded the Bulls, 45-34. "We got dominated on the glass," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "They outhustled us. We were just nailed to the ground."
