Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers are fortunate that when one All-Star forward sits out, they have another who can step up. With MVP candidate Jermaine O'Neal out for a second straight game with a right knee bruise, Ron Artest scored a career-high 35 points to lead the league-leading Pacers to a 107-92 triumph over the Eastern Conference-worst Orlando Magic, who were without Tracy McGrady. Artest, who also had seven rebounds, five assists and three streals, greatly impressed both Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and Magic coach Johnny Davis. "Artest was a one-man wrecking crew at the small forward position," Carlisle said. "The guy always fills up a stat sheet, but I thought tonight his will carried our team. He just refuses to lose." "You can't allow any one player to dominate the game, and I thought Artest did that on us tonight," Davis said. "He pretty much drove the ball and kind of willed the game for Indiana tonight." Al Harrington added 19 points and Jeff Foster chipped in 16 and 11 rebounds for the Pacers, who won their third straight game and extended the Magic's losing streak to seven games. "With Jermaine out, everybody had to step up their game and everybody did," Artest said. "Jeff, Al and me pretty much picked up the scoring. Jeff picked up some rebounds and rebounded well." Tyronn Lue scored a career-high 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting for Orlando, which was missing McGrady for a third time in four games. The All-Star missed two games due to the death of his great-grandmother and played in Orlando's 105-90 loss to Miami on Wednesday before sitting out this one with a sore left knee. "The team knew that Tracy was going to be out, so they were going to have to step up tonight," Lue said. "My main focus was just to play hard. If you play hard, you never know the outcome, so we just wanted to give it our all. I think everyone gave a 100 percent effort tonight." Juwan Howard added 24 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who trailed by 11 points entering the fourth quarter and got no closer than six thereafter. Lue scored 15 points in the first quarter, which ended tied at 21. "We allowed him to get going early, and he got so much confidence that he just believed that he wasn't going to miss," Carlisle said. "And for a while there he wasn't missing." Artest, who had seven points in the opening period, added nine in the second to help Indiana take a 50-42 lead into the break. "Every time we were in a bind, he was there to get us out of it with a basket or a stop or something," Harrington said of Artest. "He played great and we followed his lead." The Pacers led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter and took a 78-67 advantage into the final 12 minutes.
