Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce and the Boston Celtics moved a step closer to the playoffs and reclaimed some dignity in their rivalry with the New Jersey Nets. Pierce scored 34 points to lead the Celtics past the Nets for the first time in six meetings, 102-93. The Nets, who once again played without All-Stars Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin, had beaten the Celtics in their previous two meetings this season and three last season, sweeping a playoff series in between. "It was a big win," Pierce said. "We just took advantage of them not having their heart and soul tonight. They didn't have Kidd or Martin so we just had to take advantage of it." Boston led, 53-46, at halftime and opened the advantage game up early in the third quarter. The Celtics went on a 14-0 run behind five points from Pierce to take a 70-52 lead with just under six minutes left in the period. "It didn't matter tonight if we're playing the Nets or if we're playing ... whoever; the playoff picture is on the line," Pierce said. "I would have come out this way regardless of who we played just for the simple fact that we were behind the eighth spot. We needed a win and we got it." After the game, Nets coach Lawrence Frank placed the loss squarely on his shoulders for his lack of defensive adjustments. "I did a very poor job with our game-plan against Paul Pierce," said Nets coach Lawrence Frank. "He was able to get where he wanted to go and I failed to adjust. A Very poor job on my part." The Nets never came closer than nine points the rest of the way. Pierce made his first six shots en route to hitting 10-of-20. The All-Star forward also was 13-of-15 from the free-throw line. The Celtics (32-40) moved into eighth place, one-half game ahead of Cleveland for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. "It's a big game for us it puts us back in the playoff picture with Cleveland losing tonight," Pierce said. Richard Jefferson scored 28 points and Rodney Rodgers added a season-high 24 to lead the Nets, who clinched a playoff berth with Cleveland's loss. Despite being without their two best players, the Nets were not looking for excuses. "We've got to take responsibility for the way we played tonight," Jefferson said. "I've got to be held responsible for what I did. I missed five or six blockouts that led to offensive rebounds and easy buckets." "You've got to look yourself in the mirror first. I think each of us could have gone out there and done better at some part of the game," added center Jason Collins. Chucky Atkins had 17 points and six assists for Boston while Walter McCarty added 15.
