Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- After a series of dominant defensive efforts in the last month, the Detroit Pistons found their offense. Tayshaun Prince scored 20 points and Corliss Williamson and Elden Campbell added 13 apiece off the bench as the Pistons routed the travel-weary New York Knicks, 100-85, to snap a two-game slide. With each team minus one of its starters, the Pistons took advantage of the fatigued Knicks, who played at home against Toronto on Friday. Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace sat out with a sore lower back and New York guard Allan Houston did not play due to a bruised left quadriceps. But Prince was unstoppable in the first half, making all eight of his shots and scoring 18 points. Chuancey Billups matched a season high with 13 assists, 10 in the first half. "We did a great job jumping out on the fastbreak," Prince said. "We were hitting the wide-open shot." With Prince and Billups sparking the offense, the Pistons raced to a 67-49 halftime lead and surpassed the century mark for the first time since February 29, a span of 12 games. Detroit, who held nine of its previous 11 opponents under 80 points, led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter. "I always feel like I can score," said Billups, who contributed 11 points. "But for us to get everyone involved so we can take it to the next level, I have to start making other players better, and I think I am." DerMarr Johnson, starting in place of Houston, paced the Knicks with 17 points. The Pistons clamped down on Stephon Marbury, holding him to just 12 points. Marbury averaged 30.5 points in his previous four games, including 38 in Friday's win over the Raptors. Detroit jumped to an early 12-2 lead and never trailed. The Knicks were sluggish on offense throughout, committing three shot clock violations. "We've got guys out there playing more minutes than they normally play and they're just not used to each other as well," New York coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It's asking a lot. Tonight (Johnson) has to play 39 minutes." The Knicks (34-40) remained seventh in the Eastern Conference. They dropped two games behind Miami and lead Boston and Cleveland by just one game in the tight playoff race. "We have some injuries and we have to turn around and regroup," said New York forward Vin Baker, who scored 16 points.
