Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs made quick work of the Phoenix Suns. Duncan scored 10 of his 14 points in a dominant first quarter as the Spurs jumped to an early lead and blew out the Suns, 105-76, completing their first series sweep in 14 years. The defending NBA champion Spurs won for the fourth time in five games and clinched their seventh straight playoff berth. Phoenix scored the game's first basket before Duncan, working his way back from a quadriceps injury, scored eight points in an early 10-0 run that gave the Spurs the lead for good. Hedo Turkoglu also scored 10 of his 14 points in the first period, when San Antonio raced to a 31-13 lead. The Spurs shot 57 percent (12-of-21) from the floor while holding the Suns to 29 percent (6-of-21). Phoenix got no closer thereafter, trailing by as many as 38 points. It was swept in the four-game series by San Antonio for the first time since the 1989-90 season. Duncan played just 18 minutes, three in the second half. The two-time NBA MVP added 10 rebounds, four assists and a block. "It was a good night for us," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was nice to be able to rest our starters and it was wonderful to be able to get him off that leg." Point guards Tony Parker and Jason Hart scored 12 points each, Devin Brown added 10 and Manu Ginobili and Robert Horry had nine apiece for the Spurs (48-25), who kept the pressure on first-place Minnesota in the Midwest Division. "We don't set any goals as far as catching this guy or that guy," said Popovich, whose team has had the best record in the NBA in four of the last eight years. "The only goal we set was for us to get as familiar with each other as we can by playoff time. How that will work out, I don't know." "We just need to take care of our business and not worry about Minnesota," Brown added. Amare Stoudemire scored 20 points and Joe Johnson added 15 for the Suns, who completed a 2-2 road trip. Phoenix was coming off a win at New Orleans but ran out of gas very early. It was 0-of-5 from 3-point range and put up little resistance on defense. "They played very well. They didn't miss any shots," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We didn't have the pep and we didn't have anyone who could fire."
