Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- If the Utah Jazz make their 21st straight postseason appearance, Carlos Arroyo will have paved the way. Carlos Arroyo hit a 10-foot floater as time expired, giving the Jazz an exciting 85-83 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Arroyo had 19 points, 10 assists and six rebounds and made a pair of huge plays but in the final 13 seconds. With Denver trying to get a game-winning shot, Arroyo drew an offensive foul from point guard Andre Miller. On Utah's next possession, Arroyo was fouled before shooting by Jon Barry with 1.2 seconds left. Following a timeout, Arroyo took an inbounds pass from Raja Bell, was not picked up by Barry and released his shot just before the horn sounded. "Well, that's the kind of shot you like to see win the ballgame," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "It was a nice win. (Arroyo) made some shots for us. He shot the ball well and it's important that he makes some of those. Otherwise we're in trouble." After his shot swished through, Arroyo was mobbed by his teammates. The dejected Nuggets waited for a replay to confirm what they already knew and trudged off the court. "I was just trying to get open. I knew we only had one second to get a good shot," Arroyo said. "(Marcus) Camby had already blocked my shot earlier and he was behind me, so I thought he was going to block it again. But fortunately he didn't and we won the game." "It was just a mad scramble, basically," Barry said. "We wanted to switch everything. Arroyo kind of came up on me and gave me a shove that kind of knocked me off. I kind of froze on the play." Arroyo's heroics gave Utah (38-35) a much-needed victory and moved them one game ahead of the Nuggets (38-37) for the eighth final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Portland (37-35) also is in the hunt, and Utah has the toughest remaining schedule. It was a tough loss to swallow for Denver, which lost for the fifth time in its last seven games despite staging a late rally that nearly forced overtime. After staying with the Jazz through three quarters, the Nuggets' offense went cold in the final period as the Jazz built an 83-75 lead with just under six minutes to play. Denver's defense tightened up, holding Utah without a basket for more than five minutes down the stretch. Barry sank a 3-pointer that made it a one-possession game. After a shot clock violation by Utah, Nene hit a short jumper off the glass to forge an 83-83 tie with 1:25 to play. Anthony traveled on Denver's next possession. "I thought we were in good shape once we tied it," Barry said. "We got a couple of stops. But then to get a travel and a flop called in the last minute is kind of tough." Anthony scored 25 points but just nine after the first quarter as he battled foul trouble throughout the second half. "This is the toughest loss for me (this season)," Anthony said. "At the buzzer ... it's a frustrating way to lose. I'd rather lose by 30 or 40 points than lose like that."
