Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Terry Porter believes a missed traveling call allowed the Houston Rockets to walk away with an overtime victory. Jim Jackson hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left in overtime after it appeared he got away with taking three steps without dribbling and Steve Francis added the clinching free throw with two seconds remaining as the Houston Rockets posted a 111-107 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Rockets held a 108-107 lead when Jackson caught an inbounds pass and then appeared to walk three steps without dribbling as he braced for a foul. However, referee Tony Brown called a foul on Brevin Knight for pushing Jackson. Knight leaped into the air in disbelief and Porter, who picked up his first technical coach as Bucks coach earlier in the overtime, incredulously stared at all three officials. "A non-call so to speak or they (the officials) didn't see anything happening, I guess," Porter said. "That stands out obviously in this ballgame." To make matters worse for Porter, Milwaukee's Michael Redd was whistled for having his foot over the line on the ensuing inbounds pass, turning the ball over to Houston. Francis, who finished with 23 points, was then fouled and hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal the win. But Porter can't put all the blame on the officials. The Bucks squandered a nine-point fourth quarter lead and allowed the Rockets to send the game into overtime when Francis raced around a pick by Yao Ming and drove the left baseline for a layup at the buzzer, tying the game at 92-92. "It was a pretty well drawn up play by our coach," Francis said. "I was able to get to the basket cleanly and put it in." Bucks center Daniel Santiago was covering Yao, who led the Rockets with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Yao set a pick on Joe Smith as Francis raced to the left baseline. Santiago attempted to switch, but couldn't keep up with Francis. "Danny S (Santiago) went to him and Francis just went by him and drove the lane," Porter said. "Smith got caught in the switch and attempted to recover, but Francis is obviously a very quick player. That one just beat the buzzer." The Rockets then scored the first five points in overtime as Cuttino Mobley connected on a 3-pointer and threw a perfect alley-oop pass to Francis for a dunk. A free throw by Jackson, two jumpers by Maurice Taylor from the top of the key and a basket by Francis with 49 seconds left increased the lead to 104-97. "Maurice made two great shots and we really had good execution in the overtime until maybe the final minute," said Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy. But Redd, who played 51 minutes and finished with 36 points and 14 rebounds, scored on a follow shot and added four free throws to highlight a 10-4 run as the Bucks pulled within 108-107 with seven seconds left. The loss dropped the Bucks (36-37) under .500 and one game behind New Orleans for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee played without starting forward Keith Van Horn, who suffered a bruised left calf in Friday's win over Chicago. The Bucks had an 87-78 lead with 4:43 left in the fourth quarter after a basket by Smith, who had 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting. But Houston went on a 12-2 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes as Francis and Yao each scored four points.
