Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets again missed Jason Kidd's leadership down the stretch. Paul Pierce scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half and the Boston Celtics took advantage of Kidd's absence en route to an 84-80 victory over the Nets. Kidd, the Nets' dynamic point guard, missed his sixth straight game with a bone bruise of his left knee. His absence again was felt down the stretch as the Nets went scoreless for more than four minutes in the fourth quarter. "It was one of those nights where we had some good open opportunities - especially in the last six minutes - that we could not convert," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. Trailing, 81-78, the Nets had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. But Lucious Harris, filling in for Kidd, had the ball stolen by Walter McCarty with 5.5 seconds left. "It's frustrating. We've lot two or three games that way down the stretch," Harris said. "Tonight we had an opportunity to at least tie the ballgame and we didn't do it." In Saturday's 107-104 loss at Cleveland, the Nets squandered a five-point lead by going scoreless over the final 90 seconds. Pierce, the Celtics' best player, recovered from a poor first half in which he battled foul trouble to carry his team. He missed six of seven shots in the first half before rebounding to go 7-of-13 from the field after the break. "I was in foul trouble. I didn't really get a chance to get into a rhythm in the first half," Pierce said. "I just continued to keep my focus. I was a little frustrated with some of the calls that were being made out there and I picked up my fourth foul early in the third quarter, and after that I said I was going to settle down and I was able to do that." Ricky Davis added 17 points for the Celtics, who beat the Nets for the second time in four days while moving 1 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. "Ricky did a great job for us off the bench," Celtics coach John Carroll said. "It was big that Ricky could come in and score and take a little heat off Paul being on the bench." Richard Jefferson netted 24 points to lead New Jersey, which has lost five of six games since Kidd went on the injured list. Pierce drained a pair of 3-pointers 20 seconds apart, giving the Celtics the lead for good at 73-67 with 6:18 to play. After former Celtic Rodney Rogers made a layup with five minutes left to pull the Nets within 73-71, they went scoreless until Kerry Kittles made two foul shots with 41 seconds remaining. "This is the third game we lost because we didn't execute like we should," said Rogers, who committed seven turnovers. "We've got to find a way to do those things so we can win." Rogers, again starting in the place of Kenyon Martin, who remained sidelined with tendinitis in his knee, scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Rogers helped the Nets garner a commanding 56-39 rebounding advantage. But the Nets shot just 35 percent (29-of-83) and committed 20 turnovers that the Celtics turned into 30 points. Mark Blount had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Boston, which has won three straight and five of its last seven games.
