Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers felt better about themselves in losing than the Detroit Pistons did in winning. Richard Hamilton had 28 points and five steals as the Pistons pulled away for a 108-99 victory over the reeling Clippers. The NBA's best defensive team, the Pistons collected a season-high 18 steals against the mistake-prone Clippers. Lindsey Hunter also had five steals as the Pistons forced 22 turnovers, converting them into 31 points. Despite the gaudy defensive numbers, Pistons coach Larry Brown was not pleased. "I'm just happy it's over. It was a long game," Brown said. "If we didn't have Lindsey Hunter, Mike James, Corliss (Williamson) and Elden (Campbell), this would have been a nightmare. A lot of our starters didn't guard anyone all night, although I thought Memo (Mehmet Okur) played great." Hunter also was not happy. "It was a win, but it's not a good win," Hunter said. "That's not the way we're supposed to play. You let a team like that start feeling good about themselves and they can be dangerous. They have talent; they just don't always know how to use it." Elton Brand had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the undermanned Clippers, who lost their ninth straight game. "We're shorthanded right now, but we gave a valiant effort, and you have to be proud of the way the guys came and played," Brand said. The Clippers were without Chris Wilcox (Achilles), Bobby Simmons (hip), Quentin Richardson (back) and Marko Jaric (foot). To make matters worse, Corey Maggette played only 11 minutes before leaving with a strained hamstring. "Once we lost Corey with the hamstring in the first, we were playing on fumes at the end of the fourth quarter," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We've just been bitten by the injury bug lately. I'm really pleased with the guys who did play tonight. We just turned the ball over too much in the second half, and they won the ballgame." Despite the injuries, the Clippers held a lead late in the third quarter. But Williamson's basket with 70 seconds left triggered a 13-0 run that gave Detroit an 86-79 lead with 10:09 remaining in the contest. A three-point play by Keyon Dooling pulled the Clippers within 91-86 with 6:54 to play. Chauncey Billups answered with back-to-baskets to help the Pistons regain control. Dooling finished with career highs of 20 points and 10 assists. "We gave them life and let them think they're a better team than they really are," Billups said. "But we got the win. A lot of games like this earlier in the year we ended up losing, so it's good to get this one." Billups scored 21 points and Okur added 19 for the Pistons, who were eliminated from the Central Division race when Indiana beat Milwaukee. Detroit (48-27) already has clinched a playoff berth.
