Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- It looks like Baron Davis went down at exactly the wrong time for the New Orleans Hornets. Without their All-Star point guard, the Hornets lost their fourth straight game, 89-76, to the surging Utah Jazz. Davis is still nursing a sprained left ankle. His absence has been very costly for New Orleans (37-38), which dropped below .500 for the first time all season. The Hornets are tied with Milwaukee and Miami for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Jazz (39-36) took sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, thanks to the contributions of an unlikely hero. Journeyman forward-center Mikki Moore led a huge fourth-quarter charge as he scored all 15 of his points in the period. "I got a couple of buckets, a couple of hustle points, and it just snowballed," said Moore. "That just increases my confidence and increases my abilities. When your team is patting you on the back and telling you that you can play good, who can't play like that?" The shorthanded Hornets - who are still without Jamal Mashburn as well as Davis - were playing catch-up the entire game. They close the deficit to five points early in the fourth quarter. With 9:47 to play, Moore sank a short runner off the glass, igniting a 14-2 run that gave the Jazz a commanding 77-60 lead with less than five minutes to play. He had 10 points in the run. "He did a great job tonight," Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko said. "Coach (Jerry Sloan) gave him the time and he showed he can play good basketball. He helped us win the game. ... Mikki came off the bench and just brought some fresh energy. He was like a veteran, he fought through everything." New Orleans tried to rally in the game's final minutes but never got any closer than 10 points. "We just had some defensive breakdowns," said Hornets forward P.J. Brown, who had 10 points and eight rebounds. "It was pretty close at the end of the third and we had really kept the game close. But they got some easy ones, and we weren't offensively efficient, and that really hurt us." The Hornets are unsure whether or not Davis will be ready to suit up for Saturday's game at Portland. In his absence, backups Darrell Armstrong and Shammond Williams combined for 30 points and 11 assists, but Davis was clearly missed. "There's just not much we can do about that," Brown said. "We can't worry about things we can't control. We have no control over that. Baron's hurt, but the show must go on. It's as simple as that. We've got to continue to play and continue to get better, whether Baron or Mashburn are here or not." Gordan Giricek provided a big boost early and led the Jazz in scoring with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
