Game StoryPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury and Nazr Mohammed were acquired to help the New York Knicks make the playoffs, which is exactly what they teamed up to do. Marbury had 20 points and 12 assists and Mohammed scored 16 points as the Knicks inched closer to a postseason berth with an 86-75 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Marbury and Mohammed arrived in New York via in-season trades engineered by Knicks president Isiah Thomas. The point guard and center filled the two biggest holes in the roster and have the Knicks headed for their first playoff appearance since 2001. While playing 46 minutes and running the offense, Marbury also sank four 3-pointers, helping the Knicks bounce back from a 20-point loss at New Jersey on Friday. "We were all mad and disappointed about that loss last night," Marbury said. "So we took it upon ourselves as a group to make sure that tonight, this was a game that we were going to win." Mohammed, a former Sixer, scored 10 points in the second quarter, when the Knicks took the lead for good. He stepped away from 7-footer Samuel Dalembert to make a handful of jumpers. "Steph did a great driving to the hole," Mohammed said. "You play against a shot-blocker like Dalembert, you know that he is going to commit to whoever is going to the hole. So I just tried to step into my lanes and knock the down the open shot. It was just being at the right place at the right time." Kurt Thomas had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Tim Thomas scored 15 points for New York (36-41), which inched ahead of Boston into seventh place in the Eastern Conference. More important, the Knicks moved three games in the loss column ahead of ninth-place Cleveland. "Our destiny is in our control," Mohammed said. "We win games and we play the way we're capable, then we will be in the playoffs. We can't say that we have it under control. We haven't clinched our spot so, we have to out and keep playing." "I think that shows character," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We were all talking about it. How are we going to come out tonight? If we've got any kind of character, then we'll come out and try to redeem ourselves and play better. I take my hat off to the team because they did that. They came out, and they made it happen. They wanted to show people they were a better team." Dalembert had 13 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks for Philadelphia (32-45), which fell three games behind Boston with just five to play. The 76ers have not missed the playoffs since 1998. "What is wrong with those statisticians? They couldn't find another block?" Sixers coach Chris Ford said. "We just have to see how the other teams are doing," Dalembert said. "That was a crucial game today. We had it and we let it slip back." Mohammed's big second quarter helped the Knicks grab a 52-38 halftime advantage. Kurt Thomas' three-point play early in the third quarter gave New York its largest lead. The Sixers closed to 72-65 with 10:42 to play on a jumper by Kenny Thomas, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds. But Mohammed answered with a jumper, and Philadelphia got no closer. Willie Green scored 14 points for the Sixers, who shot just 37.5 percent (27-of-72) from the field, including 1-of-10 from the arc. "We wanted to go out there and play tough," Mohammed said. "We made (the Sixers) shoot 37 percent from the field, which was a good defensive night."
