Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Jason Richardson dealt the playoff hopes of the Cleveland Cavaliers another damaging blow. Richardson scored 14 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as the Golden State Warriors snapped a 12-game road losing streak against the Cavaliers with a 103-100 victory. The fading Cavaliers (32-44) have dropped eight of their last nine games and have fallen three games behind idle Boston for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. Boston holds the tiebreaker. "We just don't have the pieces together, but you can't fault the effort," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "The guys didn't give up. They fought and we came up short." The Cavaliers erased a 15-point deficit late in the second quarter, but were unable to contain Richardson down the stretch. Richardson scored Golden State's last 10 points, including a key jumper with 54 seconds left that made it 99-95. "I want the ball in my hands," a confident Richardson said. "I've been asking, saying it for the longest of times and tonight proved that I can be a go-to guy in the fourth quarter." Cleveland had a chance to tie after Richardson sank two free throws to make it a three-point game with 16 seconds to go. But rookie LeBron James temporarily lost control of the ball and was unable to get open for a jumper. He instead fed Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and the 7-3 center missed a long 3-pointer in the final seconds. Mike Dunleavy scored 23 points and Clifford Robinson had 10 and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, whose previous road win against Cleveland was at the Richfield Coliseum on November 28, 1990. Golden State, which played without guard Avery Johnson and center Erick Dampier due to injuries, managed a split of a four-game road trip. "When somebody goes down, somebody keeps stepping up," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. James had 34 points and 10 assists but was unable to keep pace with Richardson. "He was great. You just can't ask much more of him," James said. "He really helped his team win and we knew coming into this game that he's a great player." The 35 points for Richardson matched the most by a Warrior this season. Clifford Robinson had 35 against Cleveland on January 15. Carlos Boozer had 26 points and 13 rebounds for Cleveland, which shot just 37 percent compared to 54 percent for the Warriors. Ira Newble had a three-point play to cut the deficit to 99-98 with 47 seconds left before Richardson sank four free throws sandwiched around a basket by James.
