Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers laid an egg in one of their last winnable games of the season. The Trail Blazers wasted a golden opportunity take take sole possession of eighth place in the Western Conference with a 94-81 loss to the New Orleans Hornets, who snapped a 10-game road losing streak. Portland (39-37) entered Saturday in a virtual tie with idle Denver (40-37) for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. Five of its six remaining games are against teams higher in the standings, with two apiece against powerhouses San Antonio and the Los Angeles Lakers and a visit to Denver. "We got the Lakers twice, Denver, San Antonio all left on the schedule," Portland guard Damon Stoudamire said. "It's easy to say what we have to do, but it's not going to be easy to do it." P.J. Brown scored a season-high 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Jamaal Magloire added 22 and 12 rebounds for the Hornets (38-38), who pulled into a tie with Milwaukee for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. "It all started with practice yesterday. We had a great practice and it carried over into tonight," Brown said. "I thought we were very aggressive on defense." Portland, winners of nine of their previous 12, seemed to have the game in hand midway through the second quarter. Hornets guard David Wesley got called for a technical foul with 7:08 left and Derek Anderson made the free throw, giving Portland its biggest lead at 39-30. Then the wheels fell off as New Orleans closed the half on a 20-8 run to take a 50-47 lead. The momentum carried over in the third quarter thanks to Brown and Darrell Armstrong. Armstrong, starting for injured guard Baron Davis, scored seven straight points in a decisive 13-1 run that made it 74-57 with 2:13 to play. Armstrong finished with 15 points and 15 assists. "We weren't worried about blowing the lead, we just wanted to play hard and smart, I think we did that," Armstrong said. "This one stings," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Anytime you lose when you're in the playoff hunt, it hurts, but when we're up nine at home and don't win, it really stings." The Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak, winning for the first time since Davis, their All-Star guard, went down with a sprained left ankle. Zach Randolph had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Portland, which lost for the fourth time in 13 games and fell into a tie with Utah for ninth place. The Trail Blazers got a dismal effort from starting guards Derek Anderson and Stoudamire, who combined to score just 11 points on 3-of-25 shooting, including 0-of-12 from 3-point range.
