Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets appear to be getting used to playing without Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin. Richard Jefferson scored 20 points to lead seven players in double figures as the Nets cruised to their third straight win, a 106-89 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The playoff-bound Nets initially struggled without Kidd and Martin, their All-Stars who have played a combined 12 minutes since March 18. New Jersey dropped five of its first six games without them. With Jefferson leading the way, the Nets have won three straight games for the first time since late February, relying more on a balanced attack without a featured star. They have scored 100 points in three straight games for the first time this season. "We are still fighting; we are still trying to get better," said Jefferson, who had a career-high 12 assists. "We have guys out there that want to play and want to get better." "He is definitely the most underrated player on this team," Hawks forward Stephen Jackson said. "Besides Jason and Kenyon, he's almost the biggest part of this team, if not the biggest. He's definitely a big part of their success over the last two years and he's a great player." For just the sixth time this season, all five starters were in double figures. Kerry Kittles scored 16 points, Lucious Harris added 14 and Rodney Rogers and Jason Collins 13 apiece. In addition, Aaron Williams and Brandon Armstrong - both of whom have seen increased playing time since Kidd and Martin went down - scored 10 points each off the bench. "I thought from a leadership standpoint, Kerry, Lucious and Richard really set a tone," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "Rodney put together some strong minutes. Lucious had bruised ribs (in the fourth quarter) so he wasn't able to go and Brandon Armstrong gave us a really big lift. That is what we are all about, a total team effort." With their stars sidelined and virtually assured of the third-best record in the Eastern Conference, the Nets avoided a letdown against the Hawks, jumping out to a 28-17 lead after one quarter and leading by at least eight points thereafter. "We're proud of our team tonight," Frank said. "Tonight was not an easy game. You guys can understand because of the questions that you ask. In terms of emotionally and mentally, after accomplishing a milestone, its kind of human nature to let down a little bit." Jackson, a former Net, scored 31 points for the Hawks, who have lost three of their last four games. Jackson came off the bench as he was punished for oversleeping and missing Sunday afternoon's shootaround. "I apologized to my team and I'm going to get fined," he said. "I'll pay the consequences for it. My team knows I didn't do it on purpose. It was just one of those mornings." Rogers was ejected with 6:57 left in the third quarter for arguing, but Williams filled in nicely. Harris left with bruised ribs in the fourth quarter, but Armstrong picked up the slack. "We came together really fast," Harris said. "With those two guys out, we have only a couple of bad games, but we jelled fine and we are playing well. We are distributing the ball well and people are knocking down shots." The Nets shot 54 percent (44-of-82) from the field. They took the lead for good with a 13-0 run in the first quarter, opening a 21-11 advantage on a basket by Kittles with 3:04 to go. The Hawks got no closer than 46-38 late in the first half.
