Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Boston Celtics coach John Carroll identified this four-game road trip as a potential trap. His team failed the first test. Gilbert Arenas scored 25 of his 32 points in the second half, including a four-point play with 1:25 left, to lead the woeful Washington Wizards to a 112-102 victory over the Celtics. The loss cost the Celtics (35-42) a chance at tying the New York Knicks for the seventh playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and reduced their lead over the idle Cleveland Cavaliers (32-44) to 2 1/2 games. "They had great performances from (Larry) Hughes and Arenas who just put on a show in terms of their offensive game," Carroll said. "It is disappointing to allow a team to score 112 points and shoot 56 percent. That is just not getting the job done, so we deserved to lose." Boston's next two games are against teams in playoff spots - Miami on Wednesday and New Orleans on Friday - before the road trip ends in Atlanta on Saturday. The Celtics were probably not counting on a loss to Washington, which has the third-fewest wins in the NBA, lost all three previous meetings this season and were 1-20 against Atlantic Division teams. But they could not stop Arenas, who made 6-of-6 3-pointers in the second half, and backcourt partner Hughes, who scored 31 points. "We're not paying attention to spoiling anybody (playoff hopes)," said Arenas, who was 10-of-15 from the field. "We have to just go out there and get familiar with each other so next year it will be a smooth season." "Their guards really took over the game," said Boston's Paul Pierce, who had 17 points and tied a career-high with 13 assists. "It's disappointing because we let their guards get into the lane and make things happen." Rookie reserve Marcus Banks scored a season-high 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting and also had six steals for Boston. An 8-0 fourth-quarter run gave the Wizards a 90-83 lead. Rookie Jarvis Hayes, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day, started the spurt with a jumper, then set up a dunk by Mitchell Butler. Kwame Brown hit a hook shot in the lane before Hughes capped the run with a jumper with 9:33 left. After the Celtics pulled within 91-90, Arenas hit a 3-pointer with 6:14 remaining and connected on another from behind the arc to increase the lead to 101-94 with 3:55 left. Arenas sealed the win with another 3-pointer as he was fouled by Banks, making the free throw to complete the four-point play. Banks scored 11 points and Ricky Davis added 10 in the second quarter to help the Celtics build a 58-53 halftime lead. But the Wizards went on a 22-12 run over the first 8:16 of the third quarter, taking a 75-70 lead on a backdoor layup by Hayes.
