Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Andrei Kirilenko, Carlos Arroyo and the Utah Jazz played like a team fighting for a playoff berth. The Los Angeles Clippers played like the Los Angeles Clippers. Kirilenko scored 18 points and Arroyo added nine of his 15 in the fourth quarter as the Jazz pulled away late en route to a 97-92 triumph over the Clippers, whose season-high losing streak reached 11 games. Utah (40-37) moved into a tie with Denver for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot with five games remaining. The teams are one-half game ahead of 10th-place Portland (39-37). The Jazz, who trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, pulled within 40-34 at the break and took a 66-62 edge into the fourth quarter. The lead was just 71-69 before Jarron Collins sank a pair of free throws with 8:13 remaining that triggered a 12-0 run. Arroyo and Kirilenko had four points apiece during the burst, which ended on a pair of free throws by the All-Star Kirilenko that made it 83-69 with 4:59 left. "Some of our reserves got us back into the game with hustle plays," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I didn't say anything to these guys to play. I don't care who plays. If a guy doesn't come out and play hard he can sit down." "We're trying to pick our play up," Kirilenko said. "We have young guys here. And I'm young, too. It's pretty hard to play 82 games with the same intensity. I think, here at the end of the season everyone is a little bit tired. We need to play through that. I do think this playoff race here at the end of the season has helped us improve." Corey Maggette scored 26 points but shot just 6-of-18 for the Clippers, who saw coach Mike Dunleavy ejected with 5:23 left in the third quarter for arguing with referee Tony Brothers. "If you say something, a guy can hit you like that," Dunleavy said. "I thought I was going to get the one, and obviously I wasn't happy with the calls." Dunleavy wasn't happy with his players, either. "Our frustration level is definitely high right now," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. "You try not to get too upset because we are shorthanded, but every one here wants to come out and compete every game and play hard. Coach Dunleavy told us to leave it all out there on the court. He definitely had some tough words for us tonight." Eddie House sparked a run that gave the Clippers a 37-25 lead in the second quarter. The Jazz closed to 40-34 at halftime. "Some days your articles aren't as good as other days," Jazz guard Raja Bell told the media. "And sometimes that's the way it goes on the basketball court. We don't come out to not play well or thinking that were not going to have energy one night, but that's the way it goes sometimes."
