Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- For the first time in months, the Houston Rockets are looking over their shoulders. Troy Murphy scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting as the Golden State Warriors sent the Rockets to their season-high fifth straight loss, 97-90. Houston (42-35) had held a firm grip on seventh place in the Western Conference, but suddenly is just 1 1/2 games ahead of Utah (41-37) and two up on both Portland and Denver (40-37). "I don't know," Rockets forward Jim Jackson said. "A lack of effort, poor execution, leads to losses and that's what we're doing right now." "What do we do? Obviously we've got to play better," Steve Francis said. "That's the only way. The way you do that I guess is by doing it in the game. We still got a couple of games left to try and do it, so wherever we are - individually, as a team - has to come together." Francis thinks the team is playing not to lose, rathering than playing to win. "Our coach is very intense, and nobody really wants to do wrong so that's where you get a lot of mistakes," said Francis. "Everybody is pretty much on edge and anxious. So sometimes for guys who don't really play 40 minutes, they're playing a little tentative. But for us as starters, it's important that we at least come out and try to set the tone, and tonight the tone wasn't set." Golden State won this contest in the first half by scoring 59 points and shredding a defense that allows just over 88 per game. "We are not going to make the playoffs," Warriors center Adonal Foyle said. "It is frustrating, but you have to respect the game and go hard. Cliff (Robinson) is out there playing defense every night, and we are out there having fun and playing as a team. We are just enjoying the game." The Warriors closed the half on a 9-1 spurt and held a 59-44 advantage. Murphy scored 14 points as Golden State shot 62 percent (23-of-37) in the first two quarters. "I got some open looks, the guys looked for me and I was able to knock them down," said Murphy. The Rockets never came closer than 95-90 with 36 seconds remaining. Jim Jackson led Houston with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Yao Ming struggled at The Arena for the second consecutive game. He was only 6-of-14 from the field, scoring 15 points before fouling out with a minute remaining. Following the game, Yao declined to speak to the media for the first time in his career. "It's really hard but our guys have been doing a great job (defending Yao), especially (Foyle) and Cliff," Warriors guard Jason Richardson said. "With Damp (Dampier) being out, they really battled him down there and they made him work for his points, they contested all of his shots and just did a great job on him." The Warriors welcomed Speedy Claxton back to the lineup after he missed 20 games with a fractured right hand. Claxton scored 16 points and collected five steals in 26 minutes. "I am just a little tired. I have been out for a month, so it is nice to be back," said Claxton. "(Watching the losing streak) was frustrating because I knew that if I were out there I would have been able to help."
