Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks have probably seen enough of the Indiana Pacers. But if they are not careful, they may see them again in the playoffs. The Knicks put up virtually no resistance in a 107-86 loss to the league-leading Pacers that pushed them perilously close to the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks (36-42) are just one-half game ahead of eighth-place Boston (35-42). The team finishing eighth draws as a first-round playoff foe the Pacers, who are on pace for the best season in franchise history. "You can't really worry about playoff opponents right now," Knicks forward Tim Thomas said. "You have to get in before you can worry about those things. We just need to go win our next game." Point guard Stephon Marbury added, "I'm not really worrying about that right now. I'm ready to put this one behind us. It was an embarrassing loss." New York native Ron Artest scored 26 points for Indiana (57-21), which continues to track home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. It is 2 1/2 games in front of Sacramento (54-23) with four to play. The Pacers have gone 3-1 against the Knicks for three straight seasons. That includes six in a row at Conseco Fieldhouse, a stat that looms large. Indiana exploded for 60 points in the second half, one less than it managed in Sunday's loss at Detroit. "We survived another one. A lot of credit goes to our guys for sucking it up," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "We're doing a better job defensively, which is key for us. We've got some guys banged up and our second unit did a great job executing tonight." The Pacers shot 51 percent (41-of-80) from the field. They held a 47-37 halftime lead before methodically pulling away in the second half, leading by as many as 28 points. Nazr Mohammed had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games. "Defensively, we've got to play at a higher level," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "There were some questionable calls. I thought Tim (Thomas) got fouled a few times ... but every coach thinks that. We played a really good team and they played really well. We didn't." No win over the Knicks would be complete without a dose of Reggie Miller, who scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter on two 3-pointers and a rare dunk along the baseline. "Coming off the loss to Detroit, we wanted to get back on a winning note," said Miller," there's some added satisfaction that it came against your biggest rival." When asked for his thoughts on the 38-year-old Miller's driving dunk, Wilkens replied, "You don't want to know."
