Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- It took longer than expected, but Richard Jefferson and the New Jersey Nets eventually pulled away from the Orlando Magic. Jefferson scored 11 of his 21 points in first 5:35 of the fourth quarter as the Nets handed the Magic their 12th straight loss, 101-81. Kerry Kittles added 19 points and Brian Scalabrine had 11 of his season-high 15 in the final period for the Nets, who won for the fourth time in five games but did not take the lead for good until Jason Kidd banked in a 48-foot heave at the third-quarter buzzer for a 68-67 edge. "That's about my range," joked Kidd, who had eight points on 3-of-10 shooting in his second game back from a bruised left knee that sidelined him for nine games. "I can't make it from anywhere too close. I gotta back up." Jefferson took over early in the fourth quarter, producing a dunk, a layup, a pair of free throws, a jumper and a reverse dunk before splitting two foul shots to open an 85-75 cushion with 6:25 left. "His ability to get to the rim, not only to score but also find teammates for open baskets, (was big for us)," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said of Jefferson. "And Brian Scalabrine gave us a huge lift." "Going into the fourth quarter we had a chance, but allowed them to make too many baskets," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "A team like the Nets you have to play a half-court game, as opposed to giving them layups and dunks." Juwan Howard had 21 points and Drew Gooden chipped in 20 and 12 rebounds for the Magic, who were swept by the Nets in the season series for the first time in team history. "They have a chemistry going, it's hard to explain," Gooden said of the Nets, who held a 23-12 edge in fast-break points. "Everybody is unselfish on the break and they are always looking for the open guy, and most of all, everybody is running. They fill the lanes better than any NBA team I've seen in the last couple of years." With one more loss or a win by the Chicago Bulls (22-56), the Magic (19-60) will clinch the worst record in the NBA and a 25 percent chance of securing the top pick in the draft. Orlando held a 44-37 lead after a fast-break layup by rookie Keith Bogans with 4:10 left in the second quarter, but New Jersey scored the next 12 points and took a 50-48 edge into the break. "We played pretty good basketball for the most part, but we get into stretches where we don't close the game out or don't close the quarter out," Davis said. "We were up seven with two minutes to go in the second quarter, they get on a run, now it is a different kind of game going into halftime." "That was the first time in the game where we got some stops consistently," Jefferson said of the run. "We put together one or two steals and a couple good defensive stops where we got the rebound and got out. That was the key thing. These are the things that generate our offense." Kenyon Martin, who had played just twice in the Nets' last 10 games because of left knee tendinitis, had 14 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes. "He played through the pain and that is what it is going to be like," Frank said. "I don't think there is a miracle cure unless he is going to rest until July. He's playing through a lot of pain. It hurts but he is doing everything he can to help the team."
