Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns are not going to the playoffs, but they have been affecting the postseason plans of others. Amare Stoudemire scored 23 of his 29 points in the first half as the Suns rolled to an 89-83 victory over the slumping Memphis Grizzlies. After losing three in a row, Phoenix (28-52) has won consecutive games over winning teams for the first time this season. On Friday, the Suns stunned Sacramento, which was knocked out of sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. In this one, Phoenix avenged a loss at Memphis nine days ago and prevented the Grizzlies (50-30) from assuming sole possession of fifth place in the Western Conference. "We're just coming out and competing every night and trying to get a win," Stoudemire said. "Regardless (of) whether they're knocked down from a certain seed, we're trying to get better for next year." The only thing stopping Stoudemire in the first half was foul trouble. The 2003 Rookie of the Year worked over Stromile Swift and Bo Outlaw, helping the Suns to a 49-39 lead. Stoudemire was scoreless in the third quarter, when he picked up his fourth foul. But he returned in the final period and his three-point play gave Phoenix its largest lead at 78-64 with 7:34 left. Stoudemire tied a season high by making 13 free throws in 16 attempts. "Amare was a beast again, especially getting to the foul line," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "That really puts a lot of pressure on other teams. They have a hard time stopping him, or at least not fouling him." "He's a young player, very athletic, strong," Grizzlies forward James Posey said. "He strikes fear into a lot of people with his physical style. He's a beast." Rookie Leandro Barbosa scored 17 points and iron man Joe Johnson added 15 for the Suns, who limited the Grizzlies to 35 percent (31-of-88) from the field. "Even though we're not playing to be in the playoffs, we still got something to look forward to," said Johnson, who played 40-plus minutes for the 34th straight game. "That's coming out every night and playing hard, spoiling it and making it hard for other teams." Shane Battier scored 18 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who have lost four of five games. They visit Dallas on Tuesday, with fifth place in the West on the line. "They deserve all the credit," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "They outfought us. There is no way we can win on the road and shoot 35 percent, have 16 turnovers and expect to pull things out." A jumper by Battier opened the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 65-60 before Casey Jacobsen hit a 3-pointer and rookie Maciej Lampe scored inside to double the lead. A dunk by Swift and a banked 3-pointer by Jason Williams again made it a five-point game with 3:42 to go. Shawn Marion put in a follow shot and Barbosa added a layup to make it 85-76 with 1:20 remaining.
