Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Despite missing two starters, the Detroit Pistons were able to finish off their regular-season home schedule in style. Richard Hamilton scored 24 points and handed out a career-high 12 assists as the Pistons routed the Washington Wizards, 101-79, for their eighth straight victory. Mike James added 21 points and Ben Wallace grabbed 12 rebounds for the Pistons (54-27), who have won 11 in a row at home and finished 31-10 at the Palace at Auburn Hills. "That was fun. We shared the ball really well," Hamilton said. "I got a lot of easy baskets. Mike was great tonight. Once he started hitting threes, I just kept trying to feed him." "I just wanted to come out in the second half with lots of energy and it worked out very well tonight," James added. Elden Campbell and Lindsey Hunter started for Rasheed Wallace (sore left arch) and Chauncey Billups (sprained left ankle). "It was a great win," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "We got 54 (wins) and we didn't have to play Chauncey and I didn't have to play Rasheed. It was a good way to finish the homestand." Ben Wallace needs just one rebound in Tuesday's season finale at Toronto to reach 1,000 for the fourth straight campaign. Gilbert Arenas scored 20 points off the bench and Larry Hughes added 19 for the Wizards (25-56), who have lost 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Pistons. "They have a good team and they have the reputation for playing good defense, so they get away with a lot of aggressive play," Hughes said. "That's a good team. Once you get that reputation for being first a defensive team, it allows you to do so much with pressuring, getting the game kind of rattled." The Wizards had a 49-43 lead early in the third quarter, but the Pistons went on a 37-13 run to surge ahead, 80-62, with 10:27 left in the final period. "Obviously, they're the best defensive team in the league," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "We were playing a terrific ballgame for about 40-42 minutes. Then we didn't trust in what we did before that. In a time of strife like that, you have to believe in something and you have to believe in how we play." A win Tuesday night in Toronto would give the third-best record in franchise history.
