Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Having a big game in his hometown was among few things that went right this season for Juwan Howard. Howard scored a season-high 38 points as the Orlando Magic snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 93-84 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Howard turned down offers from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons to sign for the mid-level exception with Orlando, a team expected to make the playoffs. But the Magic never recovered from an early 19-game losing streak. A graduate of Chicago's Vocational High School, Howard made 13-of-19 shots and helped the Magic avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Bulls. He scored 10 points during a 13-2 run to open the second half as Orlando won for the first time since March 10. "That was a big game for us," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "We finally won a game. It seems like ages since we were victorious when the clock ran out." "We could have easily tanked it and thrown in the towel," Howard added. "But we didn't. We're still trying our best to get some victories." Thanks to Howard, the Magic avoided a big collapse. The Bulls sliced the deficit to 83-75 with 4:06 to play, but Howard scored eight points in the final 3:48 to seal the win. "We knew that we could keep feeding Juwan and get something done," Orlando forward Drew Gooden said. "He only missed about six shots all night, so he was feeling it. Our main priority was to give him the ball. He saved us in the fourth quarter when they were making that run." "Howard was outstanding tonight," Davis added. "He made all the big plays and he made all the big shots and he kept us steady out there on the court." Chicago, whose 23-58 record is better than only Orlando, got a big game from Marcus Fizer, who tied a career high with 30 points and grabbed a career-best 20 rebounds. But Jamal Crawford, who scored 50 points Sunday at Toronto, was limited to 14 on 5-of-17 shooting. The Bulls were without injured front-court players Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler and Jerome Williams, then lost Antonio Davis early in the first quarter to a sprained right knee. "We got outplayed from beginning to end," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "Their size bothered us. We had a small lineup out there most of the night. We had trouble guarding them."
