Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Donyell Marshall helped give Toronto Raptors fans something to cheer about in their final home game of a disappointing season. Marshall collected 27 points and 16 rebounds as the Raptors snapped the playoff-bound Detroit Pistons' eight-game winning streak with an 87-78 triumph at the Air Canada Centre. Vince Carter scored 19 points and rookie Chris Bosh added 12 and 13 rebounds for Toronto (32-49), which won for just the second time in 12 games. The Raptors conclude their season at Milwaukee on Wednesday. "To win here at home, you can cover one of the wounds," Carter said. "It is always good to end on a positive note and it is always good to win at home. I know it is not our last game, but it's the last game here, and it's fun to win." Wednesday's contest may be the final one for first-year Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill, whose team struggled to overcome injuries to Carter and fellow starters Jalen Rose and Alvin Williams. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm still the coach until they tell me I'm not," O'Neill said. "He's been good," Bosh said of O'Neill. "He's taught me how to be a professoinal, come to work hard every day. No matter what happened, good or bad, (he taught me to) come to work hard, just keep going." Tayshaun Prince scored 21 points and Ben Wallace 15 for the Pistons (54-28), who will be the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Detroit ended the season with 16 wins in its final 19 games. "We wanted to win this game tonight. Toronto did a great job," Prince said. "Even though they are not advancing to the playoffs, they played hard enough to win the game and finish the season on the right note. "(But) we have been playing very well over the last 20 games. I don't think one loss here, at the end of the season, is going to determine our downfall in the playoffs." Detroit, which placed guard Chauncey Billups on the injured list before the game with a sprained left ankle, also rested banged-up forward Rasheed Wallace. "Tonight I didn't want to risk it," said Billups, whose team will be Milwaukee or New Orleans in the first round of the playoffs. "I wanna be ready. I want to be there for my team when it really counts. If I am healthy, that's the way I can really help." "To be fair to Detroit, they didn't have their guys down the stretch," O'Neill said. "Chauncey didn't play and Rasheed didn't play. (But) they still have good players. They're deep and they have guys that can play all the way up and down that roster. It's a good win." Toronto, which limited Detroit to 39 percent from the floor (29-of-75), saw a 13-point lead late in the third quarter whittled to 79-74 on a pair of free throws by Pistons center Mehmet Okur with 2:45 remaining. Marshall countered with a 3-pointer from the left corner, and Detroit got no closer than six points thereafter. "Donyell was phenomenal," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "Bosh played great, Jalen, Vince - they just played good. They played better than we did. Our two (point) guards (Lindsey Hunter and Mike James) played 62 minutes and scored just two points. I think it's just one of those nights."
