Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury gets to face Jason Kidd and the New Jersey Nets in the playoffs. He's seen enough of LeBron James. Capping off a brilliant rookie season, James scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 100-90 victory over the New York Knicks and a sweep of their season series. The Knicks (39-43) had a chance to climb to the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference before New Orleans beat Washington earlier Wednesday night, locking New York into seventh and a first-round playoff matchup against New Jersey. It should have extra significance for Marbury, who spent parts of three seasons with the Nets before he was traded to Phoenix for Kidd before the 2001-02 season. While Kidd has led the Nets to back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals, Marbury failed to win a playoff series with Phoenix and was traded to the Knicks in December. When Marbury arrived, the Knicks were 14-21 and in 10th place in the East. They went 25-22 the rest of the way and ended up making the postseason for the first time in three years. "I feel like everything happens for a reason," said Marbury, who scored 27 points in the season finale. "It's great for the metropolitan area. For us to be in this sitution, maybe it was supposed to be this way." James, 19, will probably have the Cavaliers in the playoffs soon enough. The first overall pick in the 2003 draft, James finished with averages of 20.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds and helped the Cavaliers more than double their win total from 17 to 35, including four victories over the Knicks. "I think we really had a successful season, not because of my statistics, but just the way the team improved," James said. "I really need time to rest, but if there was an opportunity for us to keep on going, I would love to play. Tonight was a fun way to end it." James hit two jumpers and dribbled from midcourt through three defenders for a soaring dunk in a 19-9 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and opened an 80-69 lead. James punctuated his season with a breakaway dunk with 30 seconds left and exchanged hugs with players from both teams after the final buzzer. Jeff McInnis led Cleveland with 19 points and Carlos Boozer added 14 and 12 rebounds. "We finished with wins over Miami, Milwaukee and New York, all teams that are headed to the playoffs, and I'm proud of that," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "We could have packed it in but we didn't and that says a lot about the foundation of players we are building with here." A basket by Kurt Thomas pulled the Knicks within 61-60 with 5:34 left in the third quarter before James sparked the decisive run. "I just reminded the players that if you want to beat a good team you can't have the kind of lapses we had tonight," said Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens.
